JBS Donates Millions of Tags to Enhance Cattle Traceability in Pará, Brazil

JBS Takes Major Steps for Cattle Traceability in Pará

In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing livestock management, JBS has partnered with key stakeholders to donate a staggering 3 million cattle tags. This move is intended to bolster the traceability of livestock in Pará, Brazil, a state renowned for having the second-largest cattle herd in the country.

The announcement was made during a panel discussion at the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, underlining the collaborative spirit of this initiative. Gilberto Tomazoni, the global CEO of JBS, emphasized that the program is a collective effort involving government, producers, civil society, and industry leaders. “Together, we are agents of transformation across the supply chain,” Tomazoni stated, highlighting the significance of joint efforts in achieving sustainable outcomes.

Out of the total 3 million cattle tags, 2 million have been earmarked specifically for small-scale producers, which will comprehensively cover half of the projected needs for 2025 within the state. This initiative reflects a profound commitment to empower local farmers, enhancing their ability to manage their livestock responsibly and sustainably.

Significantly, the donation includes 2 million tags funded by coalition partner The Nature Conservancy (TNC) through the Bezos Earth Fund. This partnership was solidified during COP28, where a commitment was made to support the state in launching this vital program. The remaining tags will be donated directly by JBS, ensuring that the initiative is well-supported.

In the preceding year, JBS successfully conducted a pilot tagging program covering 28,000 cattle at its facilities in Marabá and Redenção. This pilot was crucial in assessing the technology required for effective implementation, as well as ensuring compliance with the animal transit requirements set by the working group involved in the project. The insights gained from this pilot program are now being shared among coalition partners to facilitate larger scale implementation across the state.

JBS, as one of the world's largest food companies, operates a diversified platform that includes poultry, pork, beef, lamb, and plant-based products. Employing over 270,000 individuals, the company has a global footprint with operations and offices spread across numerous countries, including Brazil, the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, and China.

This initiative by JBS represents a critical step forward in revolutionizing livestock management in Brazil. It not only aims to improve traceability but also supports the livelihoods of farmers, advocating for responsible practices in the livestock industry. As the project unfolds, it has the potential to set a benchmark for sustainable agriculture not just within Brazil, but globally.
