On April 25th, 2023, at 10:30 AM, Nichibei Gakuin in Shinjuku, Tokyo will host a noteworthy lecture by Koya Ozeki, the deputy editor of the Yomiuri Shimbun English edition and recipient of the esteemed Born-Ueda International Journalist Award.

Lecture Theme


The focus of the lecture is "Techniques for English Interviews: The Questioning Skills Used by International Reporters in the Field." Koya will delve into what preparations foreign correspondents undertake when interviewing foreign leaders in English and discuss effective phrasing and techniques. He will also compare the nuances and challenges of English interviews versus Japanese ones.

This event will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing a physical audience of up to 30 participants in the classroom, along with online attendance for 50 more. Both formats will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Notably, online participation is free of charge, encouraging interested audiences to register early.

About the Award


Koya Ozeki was awarded the Born-Ueda International Journalist Award for 2023 for his outstanding reporting that has significantly contributed to international understanding. His exceptional journalistic pieces include a unique interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky conducted inside his personal train amidst the ongoing Russian invasion. He also successfully interviewed Finland's President Sauli Niinistö and Estonia's Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, garnering high accolades for his comprehensive reporting on the Ukraine crisis.

Koya Ozeki's Background


Koya Ozeki, a 53-year-old journalist from Yokohama, graduated from NYU’s journalism program. He joined Yomiuri Shimbun in 1996 and served as a correspondent in Brussels from 2007 to 2010. He then engaged in research on Japan-U.S. relations at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) where he received his Ph.D. Ozeki has also been stationed in Washington as a correspondent between 2015 to 2017 and served as the chief of the European bureau in London from 2021 to 2025.
