Shanghai Electric's Breakthrough: First Heavy-Duty Gas Turbine Sale in Malaysia

Shanghai Electric's Breakthrough in Malaysia

In a significant leap for the high-end energy sector, Shanghai Electric has successfully secured its first overseas contract for a heavy-duty gas turbine, specifically for Unit 3 of the Sarawak Samalaju Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Project in Malaysia. This contract symbolizes not just a business deal, but a notable milestone for Shanghai Electric, underlining its technological prowess and growing presence in the competitive global gas turbine market.

Details of the Contract

Under this agreement, Shanghai Electric will provide a comprehensive EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) turnkey solution for the gas-fired power plant. This encompasses a long-term service agreement (LTSA) that extends for 25 years, covering all major equipment involved in the operation. The uniqueness of this project lies in Shanghai Electric’s commitment to manufacture every core component—ranging from gas turbines and steam turbines to generators, heat recovery steam generators, and air-cooled systems—entirely in-house. This allows Shanghai Electric not only to be the sole provider of these components but also the long-term maintenance and service provider for the entire operation.

This integrated approach enables Shanghai Electric to control the entire lifecycle of the gas turbine units it produces, from manufacturing to installation and maintenance. This vertical integration strategy positions the company competitively alongside established leaders in the heavy-duty gas turbine market, ensuring that it can deliver quality and performance consistently.

Current Capabilities and Future Outlook

Shanghai Electric has a notable track record with its heavy-duty gas turbine lineup, showcasing models with power ratings of 300 MW and 78 MW. To date, the company has successfully delivered 103 units, contributing to a cumulative installed capacity exceeding 21,000 MW. The performance of these units has been outstanding, collectively accumulating more than 1.3 million operating hours through various projects.

With the robust production capabilities that Shanghai Electric maintains, it is ready to provide new gas turbine units for future projects as early as 2028. Not only has the company gained traction within the Malaysian market, but also several project developers from neighboring countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam have expressed keen interest in placing orders.

Conclusion

This latest achievement by Shanghai Electric is a testament to its technological advancement and commitment to expanding its international footprint in the energy sector. As it continues to make strides in the gas turbine market, the company's innovative approaches and strong infrastructure promise to play a crucial role in meeting the growing energy needs in the region and beyond. The successful execution of this project will likely open up further opportunities, helping to establish Shanghai Electric as a formidable player in the global energy landscape.
