Seminar on Sustainable Aviation Fuel
On
May 30, 2025, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) is organizing a significant seminar centered around the current trends in the production and supply stability of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The event will be led by Junya Kuga, a researcher from the Energy and Sustainability Division of the Mitsubishi Research Institute. In this session, attendees will gain key insights into both domestic and international advancements in SAF production, essential for achieving decarbonization targets in the transportation sector.
Importance of SAF in the Transportation Sector
The transportation sector, particularly aviation and maritime, is considered to be 'hard-to-abate' due to its reliance on fossil fuels and the challenges associated with electrification. This seminar aims to address the pressing need for alternative fuels, including biofuels, synthetic fuels, and hydrogen, which play a vital role in reducing carbon emissions in these areas. While aviation fuel options are somewhat limited, maritime fuel diversity can vary based on vessel size, type, and travel distance.
Short-term competition among biofuels is anticipated; however, fostering future coexistence could allow Japan to progress toward a more balanced decarbonization strategy. The seminar will also focus on the necessary transformation in operator awareness regarding Scope 3 emissions, as well as local production and consumption initiatives that enhance energy security.
