Bracco Imaging and Genera New Energy Launch Innovative Biomethane Facility in Italy

Bracco Imaging and Genera New Energy: A Leap Towards Sustainability

In a significant advancement towards industrial sustainability, Bracco Imaging and Genera New Energy have officially inaugurated a biomethane production facility in Tuscany, Italy. This project is a crucial element of Bracco's long-term strategy aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with its manufacturing processes.

The announcement was made on October 14, 2026, marking a collaboration that pools together the expertise in energy from Genera and Bracco's commitment to environmental responsibility. The biomethane facility, part of a larger emissions reduction roadmap, plays a pivotal role in ensuring a sustainable future for industrial operations.

The Project's Significance

The biomethane facility signifies a new chapter not just for Bracco Imaging but for the entire industrial landscape in Tuscany. By utilizing agricultural by-products and livestock manure as feedstock, the facility is set to produce renewable gas, thus securing energy needs while mitigating carbon emissions. Under a Biomethane Purchase Agreement, Bracco will access the facility's production of biomethane through certified Guarantees of Origin. This arrangement will allow Bracco to avoid approximately 8,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, equivalently powering about 35% of their thermal power plant's steam production in Ceriano Laghetto.

Marco Lupi, the Head of Global Technical Operations at Bracco Imaging, expressed the importance of this initiative, emphasizing how it manifests the company's dedication to turning sustainability strategies into actionable projects. Lupi stated, "Our direct involvement in the development and the effective collaboration with Genera New Energy allowed us to meet our sustainability targets efficiently and effectively in terms of cost and schedule."

A Collaborative Effort

Genera New Energy’s role as the industrial partner cannot be overlooked. The company has invested significantly in this project, leading its development while ensuring the operational aspects are well-maintained by Greenway Srl. Paolo Potenza, Genera's CEO, highlighted the mutual benefit derived, stating, "This project embodies our mission to support clients in lowering greenhouse gas emissions while improving energy security and cost-competitiveness. Our partnership with Bracco enhances the value we deliver to the local community and the environment."

Commitment to Sustainability

The establishment of the biomethane facility represents Bracco's broader commitment to sustainability. The firm has incorporated biomethane within its 2024 emissions reduction strategy, a move recognized by its recent designation as part of the top 1% of companies by EcoVadis, awarded the platinum medal for sustainability efforts. Emiliano Di Penta, the Energy Management Director at Bracco Imaging, noted that achieving this project was deeply rooted in consistent and collective efforts from both companies across a constantly evolving regulatory framework.

Bracco’s focus on sustainability extends past this facility, integrating many initiatives designed to lower emissions and energy consumption across all operations. The biomethane facility exemplifies innovative thinking and environmental responsiveness that are necessary for modern manufacturing.

The Future of Bracco and Genera

As they move into the operational phase, Genera New Energy is focused on ensuring the facility performs reliably and efficiently, while also delivering long-term benefits. Meanwhile, Bracco continues to push the boundaries of its operational capabilities, exploring further advancements in sustainable energy. Following the completion of this biomethane facility, Bracco and Genera are set to pioneer initiatives that pave the way for more environmentally-friendly industrial practices.

With stakeholders committed to change, this partnership not only fosters industrial growth but also sets a benchmark for responsibility amid the ongoing environmental challenges faced globally. As Bracco Imaging ingrains sustainability into its business model, the collaboration with Genera New Energy marks a significant step towards achieving reduced industrial emissions without sacrificing operational integrity.
