Bracco Imaging and Genera New Energy Launch Biomethane Facility in Tuscany for Emissions Reduction

Inauguration of Biomethane Facility in Tuscany

Bracco Imaging, a leading global entity in diagnostic imaging, in partnership with Genera New Energy, has officially opened a cutting-edge biomethane production facility in Tuscany, Italy, marking a significant advancement in their long-term sustainability objectives. This project epitomizes both companies' commitment to reducing industrial emissions and promoting renewable energy.

The newly inaugurated facility is part of Bracco's broader strategy to mitigate emissions within its operational framework. The production facility, built through a collaborative effort, showcases a robust investment of resources and expertise between the two companies. It leverages Genera's capabilities in sustainable energy infrastructure and Bracco's dedication to improving the environmental impact of their operations.

Strategic Collaboration for Sustainable Solutions

Under the terms of a Biomethane Purchase Agreement, Bracco will gain access to renewable gas sourced from the facility's biomethane production, secured through certified Guarantees of Origin. This agreement is poised to cover around 35% of the natural gas demand for the thermal power plant at Bracco's Ceriano Laghetto site, which generates steam essential for various manufacturing processes.

The environmental impact of this facility is substantial, with expectations to avert approximately 8,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually linked to steam generation activities over the next 15 years. This initiative, integrated into Bracco’s 2024 emissions reduction roadmap, reflects the company's proactive measures to address greenhouse gas emissions generated during operations.

In March 2025, an agreement was established for both co-development and investment for the conversion of the existing Greenway facility. The meticulous conversion process commenced in March 2025 and reached successful completion in September 2026, a testament to the strategic planning and execution capabilities of both parties involved.

Commitment to Sustainability

Marco Lupi, Head of Global Technical Operations at Bracco Imaging, expressed that this project represents a pivotal milestone in their efforts towards sustainability. The direct involvement in the facility's development, from its conception to execution, signifies a cohesive strategy to meet cost and timeline goals while actively working towards corporate environmental targets. Emiliano Di Penta, Energy Management Director at Bracco, added that this achievement underlines the extensive collaboration between specialized teams from both companies—navigating challenges within a dynamic regulatory landscape while pioneering innovative solutions.

Broader Sustainability Goals

This biomethane project aligns seamlessly with Bracco's comprehensive sustainability agenda, which encompasses various initiatives focused on enhancing energy efficiency and reducing emissions throughout its global operations. In recognition of its ongoing efforts, Bracco Imaging secured its second EcoVadis Platinum Medal in July 2026, elevating the company into the toptier echelon of organizations recognized for excellence in sustainability.

Paolo Potenza, Chief Executive Officer of Genera New Energy, highlighted that their contributions extend beyond merely meeting operational needs; they aim to empower their clients in minimizing their carbon footprints while enhancing energy reliability. This aligns perfectly with Bracco's path forward toward reducing emissions while fostering a sustainable industrial approach.

As the operational phase of this facility begins, Genera aims to ensure reliable and efficient production while simultaneously creating value for the local community. This endeavor is an embodiment of the tangible steps both organizations are taking in pursuit of ambitious emissions reduction goals, utilizing agricultural by-products and energy crops to supplement biomethane production.

Future Implications

This milestone signifies a crucial affirmation of Bracco’s dedication toward emission reductions across industrial practices, as they continue to align with evolving sustainability expectations. Looking ahead, the commitment to integrating operational efficiency with environmental stewardship will be instrumental in shaping a resilient future for the healthcare industry. The synergy established with Genera New Energy lays a robust foundation for a partnership that champions innovation in renewable energy solutions, setting a benchmark in the quest for sustainable industrial practices.
