Infinium Unveils Innovative mSAF Platform for Sustainable Aviation Fuels Using Methane
On September 21, 2026, Infinium, a pioneer in sustainable energy solutions, launched its mSAF product line at an event in Sacramento, California. This groundbreaking platform introduces a novel method for producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) derived from methane sources, including renewable natural gas, biogas, and other methane streams. The mSAF initiative not only broadens Infinium's commercial product offerings but also contributes significantly to the aviation industry's push for lower carbon emissions.
The conversion route to mSAF utilizes Infinium's advanced Fischer-Tropsch technology, which is already implemented commercially, alongside electrified reforming processes. This combination enhances production capabilities, allowing the use of a diverse range of feedstocks and locations, thus complementing the existing eSAF business focused on CO₂ utilization.
A Step Toward Carbon Neutrality in Aviation
The launch of mSAF addresses a pressing challenge in the aviation sector: achieving the stringent sustainability targets set across the industry. Recognizing that no single source of feedstock can provide all the necessary low-carbon fuels, Infinium's initiative leverages various fresh methane sources—sourced from landfills, dairy farms, and wastewater treatment facilities located across North America, Asia, and Europe. By tapping into these resources, Infinium aims to diversify the utilization of captured methane, creating opportunities for the sustainable aviation sector.
Robert Schuetzle, CEO of Infinium, stated, "mSAF expands our platform capabilities. It allows us to apply our proven technology to a wider range of locations and supply more low-carbon fuel, thereby complementing our growing eSAF business. The aviation industry necessitates multiple scalable pathways, and Infinium is well-positioned to continue offering impactful options."
Proven Technology and New Feedstock Routes
With more than a decade of experience, Infinium has established itself as a leader in the conversion of gases into liquid hydrocarbons through their patented Synthesize™ process. This innovative design merges an advanced Fischer-Tropsch catalyst with a reactor to efficiently convert synthesis gas into valuable hydrocarbons, also employed in producing Infinium's eFuels. Both mSAF and eFuels share core synthesis technologies, ensuring consistency in catalyst manufacturing, product specifications, and certification processes.
The mSAF platform incorporates the patented Reform™ system, an electrical methane steam reformer (eSMR) designed to generate synthesis gas with a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional steam methane reforming systems. Infinium is currently deploying the world’s largest eSMR facility at the Roadrunner project, focused on converting methane into synthesis gas.
Traditional reforming processes burn a portion of the feed gas to generate the necessary heat, inadvertently adding emissions to the fuel's lifecycle footprint. In contrast, Infinium's Reform™ technology harnesses renewable electricity to deliver the required thermal energy. This method conserves more carbon from the feedstock for conversion, improving fuel yield per unit of gas while eliminating combustion emissions associated with conventional systems. Enhanced performance and reduced emissions from reforming will directly correlate to improved project economics, particularly in renewable natural gas projects where feedstock cost and carbon intensity are paramount.
Independent Carbon Intensity Verification
Partnering with RMI, an independent energy and climate research organization, Infinium evaluated the market potential for mSAF. RMI emphasizes that biogas and renewable natural gas are emerging as critical avenues for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors, such as aviation. However, they underscore the importance of rigorous lifecycle accounting, traceable custody chains, and reliable certification frameworks to realize significant climate and commercial benefits.
“Biogas and renewable natural gas hold promise for low-emission fuels and industrial value chains but require robust lifecycle accounting and certification systems,” said Bryan Fisher, RMI's CEO. Infinium intends to calculate and independently certify carbon intensity on a project-by-project basis, adhering to applicable regulatory and voluntary certification frameworks.
By integrating mSAF into its suite of eFuels, Infinium not only diversifies feedstock and project location options but also progresses its commitment to low-carbon fuel solutions, staying at the forefront of the sustainable aviation fuel debate.
