Strengthening Connections Between Home Healthcare and Emergency Medicine in Japan
The Japan Planning Institute (JPI) is set to host an insightful seminar on
November 6, 2025, focusing on the challenging landscape of home healthcare in Japan. The seminar will feature a distinguished speaker,
Keigo Sano, who serves as the Director of the Outpatient and Home Healthcare Policy Office within the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. This event provides a critical opportunity for healthcare professionals and stakeholders to understand the urgent issues surrounding home healthcare and the necessary collaboration with emergency medical services.
Growing Demand for Home Healthcare
With the increasing aging population in Japan, the demand for home healthcare services has surged. This trend is accompanied by a significant rise in emergency transport cases. However, a pressing concern arises when patients receiving care at home experience sudden health deteriorations. Often, the patient's wishes regarding medical treatment and care are not well-communicated among family members and healthcare providers. Consequently, patients may receive undesired medical interventions. This scenario highlights the need for effective communication frameworks among various parties involved in home healthcare, ensuring the patient's preferences regarding care locations and life-prolonging measures are respected and understood.
Objectives of the Seminar
The upcoming seminar will delve into the following key areas:
1.
Current Situations Surrounding Home Healthcare: An overview of the existing healthcare delivery systems and medical plans in place to support home healthcare.
