One Year of Xserver's Student Plan: Empowering Students to Create with ICT

Celebrating One Year of the Xserver Student Plan

As of April this year, Xserver Co., Ltd. based in Osaka has successfully completed its first year of the Student Plan, which provides high school students in Japan with free rental server services for up to six years. This initiative aims to support students eager to explore website creation and programming in a robust server environment.

Bridging the Gap in Creative Opportunities

Thanks to the GIGA School Initiative, launched in 2019, significant advancements have been made in equipping schools with individual devices and stable network environments. With the incorporation of 'Information I' as a mandatory subject in high schools, students now have greater access to foundational programming and data utilization skills. Additionally, schools have started introducing AI literacy education, including generative AI, demonstrating a progressive shift within the educational framework.

However, tangible experiences in creating and disseminating content are still heavily influenced by students' home environments, school facilities, and the support networks surrounding them. This reality creates disparities in access to equitable education.

In light of these challenges, the Student Plan was established to ensure every high school student has the environment needed to cultivate their 'creating power' without financial constraints.

Details of the Xserver Student Plan

The Xserver Student Plan is an educational support initiative that offers a genuine rental server environment, free of charge, for the maximum duration of six years to students in Japan. Since its launch about a year ago, it has welcomed over 1,000 students, showcasing its popularity and effectiveness in educational settings.

This plan gives students access to high-performance servers, currently leading the market in Japan, without any advertisements. The features include unlimited multi-domain options and free SSL, which are essential for building and managing websites. Students have utilized these services to create blogs, showcase portfolios, practice programming, and more, engaging with their individual interests and learning paths.

For those requiring higher specifications, Xserver also offers a paid plan with enhanced processing capabilities and stability, available at a discounted rate as part of their educational support.

Real Stories of Success

The feedback from students utilizing the Xserver Student Plan has been overwhelmingly positive. Many users have not only confronted technical challenges but also experienced growth through their connections with schools and the community. Here are a few examples:

"A Real Environment for Learning Programming" (Hokkaido, High School Freshman)

Aspiring to become an IT engineer, I have been using the Student Plan as a near-production practice environment. I've developed a bulletin board with login functions and an inquiry form using PHP and JavaScript, which allowed me to manage everything from code to hosting. The sense of accomplishment I felt when my code was up and running on the server was monumental! This experience illuminated differences between local and production environments, enhancing my practical knowledge and furthering my passion for programming.

"Transforming a Personal Blog into a Class Resource" (Nara, Middle School 3rd Year)

Originally a personal blog, I transitioned my website into a communication hub for my class, sharing schedules and important announcements. After migrating to Xserver, I noted a significant increase in traffic and even gained trust from teachers to facilitate better relationships within my school.

"Developing a Ticketing System for Cultural Festivals" (Miyazaki, Middle School 3rd Year)

Driven to improve my programming skills, I created a ticket system for our school's cultural festival using PHP. Uploading to the server was incredibly straightforward, and I've recently been challenged to automate uploads using GitHub Actions. Because of this, I am becoming proficient in PHP and JavaScript!

Expanding Opportunities for More Students

Due to positive responses from students and educational institutions alike, Xserver has committed to continuing the Student Plan. New students across Japan, including those starting this year, can take advantage of the program for free. Xserver aims to support further implementation in educational settings while partnering with companies and organizations to enhance the plan and broaden the reach of ICT learning experiences for students. By expanding safe environments for practical learning, we aim to further enrich the landscape of 'learning through creating.'
