Kinokuniya Bookstore at the Brooklyn Museum

The renowned Kinokuniya Bookstore, under the leadership of President Yoshio Fujinori, announced its sponsorship of the upcoming "Art of Manga" exhibition, taking place at the Brooklyn Museum in New York from October 3, 2026, to January 31, 2027. In addition to the exhibition's funding, Kinokuniya will create a special space called the Reading Room, celebrating its centennial in 2027. This initiative embodies Kinokuniya's mission of connecting cultures and people through the rich medium of manga, focusing on its past achievements and aspirations for the future.

About the 'Art of Manga' Exhibition

The "Art of Manga" exhibition showcases over 600 original artworks, illustrating the creative processes of manga artists and highlighting the unique expressions and cultural significance of manga. Following its debut at the de Young Museum in San Francisco in Fall 2025, this exhibition will mark the East Coast’s first opportunity to explore the depth of manga art.

A Gateway for Manga Readers

The Reading Room is designed to invite visitors into the world of manga. It will feature around 1,000 selected manga volumes provided by Kinokuniya, allowing attendees to interact directly with the artworks and immerse themselves in the stories. Available in multiple languages including English, Japanese, Chinese, and French, the manga selection aims to translate the experience of viewing art into the experience of reading manga, bridging the gap between visual art and literature.

Kinokuniya's extensive overseas network spans 11 countries, delivering a diverse selection of books to readers with varied linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The successful model of curating multilingual literature sets Kinokuniya apart. Through the Reading Room, the bookstore seeks to promote the appeal of manga while contributing to the dissemination and promotion of Japanese culture to a broad audience.
