OSCP Introduces Revolutionary MK2Z-3 Photonic IMU at Silicon Valley Space Week

At this year's Silicon Valley Space Week, OSCPS Motion Sensing Inc., known as OSCP, has introduced an innovative product that is set to revolutionize navigation technology: the MK2Z-3 photonic inertial measurement unit (IMU). This new IMU pushes the boundaries of precision and versatility, featuring up to three photonic gyro axes within a lightweight casing of less than one kilogram. Unlike traditional units that often require bulky configurations, the MK2Z-3 is designed with a target gyro bias stability of 0.01 degrees per hour or better, which positions it among the top-tier systems in navigation quality.

The MK2Z-3 builds upon the foundation laid by the MK2Z prototype, which initially employed a photonic gyroscope only on its Z-axis. With the MK2Z-3, integrators can easily select configurations that incorporate one, two, or all three axes, allowing them to customize the sensor according to their specific mission requirements rather than adapting their entire design around the sensor itself.

Kazem Zandi, the founder and CEO of OSCP, highlighted the significance of maintaining orientation in environments devoid of external reference points, stating, “A spacecraft or lander must be able to track its own orientation when there are no external references available to validate it.” This pressing need is what the MK2Z-3 aims to address by making photonic gyroscopes accessible to all three axes of motion in a compact form.

This cutting-edge unit is not just limited to space applications; it also finds potential uses in small satellites, launch vehicles, landers, return capsules, and planetary rovers. Moreover, it serves terrestrial platforms that operate over extensive ranges and require long-duration missions without satellite positioning.

“Customers testing the MK2 had been consistently inquiring whether we could deliver similar high performance across the other two axes,” explained Thibaut Gravey, OSCP’s Vice President of Product. “The MK2Z-3 is our definitive answer, retaining the familiar interfaces of RS-422 or CAN-FD that our customers have grown accustomed to. Transitioning from a one-axis to a multi-axis system does not necessitate starting the integration from scratch.”

This new sensor module adds to the comprehensive MK2 product line, which includes the MK2M2 MEMS-IMU and the MK2E2 with a Z-axis photonic gyroscope. Scheduled for sample deliveries in 2027, the exact specifications of the MK2Z-3 are labeled as design goals and may shift as its development progresses. Notably, the MK2Z-3 is designed and manufactured in Montréal and is compliant with ITAR regulations, ensuring that it meets stringent quality and export guidelines.

For attendees of Silicon Valley Space Week, more information about the MK2Z-3 and other OSCP products can be found at their booth 6, or by visiting OSCP’s official website at oscp.com. Founded in 2015 and based in Montréal, OSCP has built a reputation for designing and producing advanced photonic gyroscopes and IMUs that combine tactical-grade accuracy with the compact size, lightweight, low energy consumption, and affordability associated with MEMS technology. Its sensors are essential for navigation applications where GNSS signals are unreliable or entirely unavailable.

OSCP serves a diverse clientele across sectors including aerospace, defense, maritime and underwater industries, railways, robotics, and autonomous ground platforms, ensuring that high-quality positional awareness is available for various applications. This latest announcement marks another significant step forward for a company that consistently strives to advance motion sensing technologies in critical fields.
