Rising Trends in Tequila Consumption: More Americans Embrace the Spirit
In a recent survey canvassing 1,000 adults in the U.S. who drink tequila at least once a month, it was found that 35% are consuming more of the spirit compared to a year ago. In stark contrast, only 9% claim they're drinking less, indicating a robust growth in interest for tequila as a beverage choice. This surge is predominantly noticeable among millennials, with more than half (53%) of the respondents aged 21 to 29 reporting an increase in their tequila intake.
Interestingly, while tequila's consumption is rising, overall alcohol consumption in the U.S. remains low, matching record lows from previous years. The findings were released in "Tequila's 10% Problem," a detailed report from The Tequila Report, which dives deep into consumers' spending habits, choices, and the emerging trend towards craft tequila.
One intriguing aspect of the report is the ongoing appeal of craft tequila brands. These brands are experiencing growth at an astonishing rate, with sales increasing by 18.6% over the last two years. Despite craft tequila accounting for only about 10% of the overall tequila market, it has contributed more than its share of growth, with over $167 million added to retail sales while other brands collectively lost out on approximately $92 million in revenue during that same period. The evolution of consumer preferences plays a vital role in this trend, as many buyers are significantly more inclined to select brands that do not use industrial methods and avoid additives.
The report highlights several factors influencing purchasing behavior. The most critical aspect appears to be familiarity with the brand, as 72% of respondents indicated that this factor plays a significant role in their purchasing decisions. Following closely is price, with 64% of respondents concurring it heavily impacts their choices. Additionally, many consumers look for favorable online reviews and claims that products are free from additives, with 75% having heard of additive-free tequila.
Average consumer spending remains modest, with 82% of respondents typically spending $50 or less for a 750ml bottle. It's worth noting that while some individuals are willing to splurge on high-priced options, with nearly half having purchased bottles costing $100 or more, only about 10% usually buy tequila at that price point.
Social influences also shape tequila consumption habits. Friends and family hold sway over purchasing decisions, with 47% of respondents influenced by suggestions from those close to them. Bartenders and servers, who impact decisions for 32% of participants, are preferred over retail staff in guiding brand choices. Interestingly, online research has become integral, with 59% of consumers looking into tequila options before making a purchase.
When it comes to drinking preferences, the survey revealed that consumption as shots is nearly equal to cocktails, with 61% of respondents indicating they frequently drink tequila in this manner. Among younger drinkers, this tendency is even more pronounced, with 73% of those aged 21-29 regularly taking shots. In contrast, women are more inclined to enjoy tequila-based cocktails, whereas men prefer drinking it neat.
Despite the rise of celebrity-branded spirits, only 36% of respondents view celebrity ownership as a significant factor in their purchasing choices. Additionally, an interesting trend arises with 18% of participants who have decreased their tequila consumption opting for cannabis as an alternative, alongside those switching to other alcoholic beverages, indicating a shifting landscape of relaxation and social habits.
The data suggests that tequila, particularly craft varieties, is poised for continued growth, though it must compete not only against other spirits but also against various forms of leisure activities, including cannabis. As consumers explore their preferences and deepen their understanding of what drives their choices, craft tequila's share of the market may likely expand if brands can effectively reach out to the remaining 90% of tequila enthusiasts currently devoted to alternative products.
