Georgia-Pacific's Significant Investment in Palatka Mill
Georgia-Pacific, a leader in the manufacturing of household essential products, has announced a substantial investment of approximately $150 million aimed at modernizing its production capabilities in Palatka, Florida. This initiative focuses specifically on the Angel Soft® bath tissue line, a product that is widely recognized and used by around 60 million households in the U.S.
The investment is part of Georgia-Pacific's ongoing strategy to enhance its consumer tissues division, improving both the efficiency and safety of its manufacturing processes. Construction has already begun, with the project slated for completion by the second quarter of 2028.
Details of the Investment
At the heart of this investment lies the overhaul of the Number Four paper machine, a piece of equipment that has been in use since 1980. By replacing this outdated machinery, Georgia-Pacific not only aims to sustain its current production rates but also to advance its ability to deliver high-quality products to consumers. The modernization effort will allow for an increase in manufacturing capabilities, ensuring that the Palatka mill can meet the growing demand for its quality tissue products, including Angel Soft®, Quilted Northern®, Brawny®, and Sparkle®.
President of Georgia-Pacific's consumer tissue, towel, and napkins business, Andrew Noble, expressed confidence in this investment, stating, “This investment demonstrates our confidence in Palatka and in the future of our consumer tissue business.” He's optimistic that this modernization will empower the company to meet consumer expectations and market demands more effectively.
Vice President of Manufacturing at the Palatka mill, Vin Webster, echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the rebuilt machine will enable better customer service and the application of technology in more effective ways. He mentioned that the project aligns with Georgia-Pacific's vision of creating long-term value through innovation, stewardship, and teamwork.
Importance of the Palatka Mill
The Palatka mill plays a critical role in Georgia-Pacific's consumer products operation. Its strategic location and integrated capabilities for pulp processing, infrastructure, and production efficiency make it essential for the company's tissue business. Existing converting assets will be leveraged, enhancing both production and employee safety.
This investment in Palatka is part of a broader strategy by Georgia-Pacific to strengthen its tissue production capabilities across various locations, including investments announced earlier in facilities located in Alabama, Louisiana, Wisconsin, and Oregon.
Overall, this $150 million investment not only signifies Georgia-Pacific’s commitment to enhancing its production capabilities in Palatka but also reflects the company's long-term vision for its consumer tissue products.
With this initiative, Georgia-Pacific continues to maintain its stance as one of the leading manufacturers in the tissue product industry, ensuring that it meets the evolving needs of consumers in today’s market.
