Shanghai Electric Secures Major International Gas Turbine Order in Malaysia

In a remarkable achievement for the energy sector, Shanghai Electric has secured its first international contract for high-performance gas turbines. This pivotal win pertains to the 500 MW Samalaju combined cycle gas turbine project located in Sarawak, Malaysia. This contract marks a significant recognition of Shanghai Electric's advanced gas turbine technology and highlights the company’s growing competitiveness in the global gas turbine market.

According to the agreement, Shanghai Electric will deliver a comprehensive solution encompassing engineering, procurement, and construction for the gas power plant, alongside a long-term service agreement (LTSA) that extends for 25 years, covering all major equipment. Each key component, from gas and steam turbines to generators, waste heat recovery boilers, and air-cooled systems, will be manufactured in-house by Shanghai Electric. This positions the company as the exclusive provider of long-term maintenance and service programs, thereby offering a full lifecycle solution.

The fully integrated capability of Shanghai Electric ensures coverage across the entire lifecycle of the project, encompassing equipment production, system integration, and ongoing operational support. This vertical model allows the company to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with established global leaders in the high-performance gas turbine sector.

Currently, Shanghai Electric’s range of high-performance gas turbines includes two primary models with capacities of 300 MW and 78 MW. To date, the company has delivered a total of 103 blocks, enabling a cumulative installed capacity exceeding 21,000 MW. The blocks subject to Shanghai Electric’s long-term service agreements have already accumulated over 1.3 million operational hours. With high manufacturing capacity available across both turbine classes, the company anticipates supplying new blocks by 2028.

In addition, the current contract has sparked considerable interest from project developers in neighboring regions, notably Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam, all keen to explore contracts with Shanghai Electric. The company's achievements underline a pivotal moment in the offshore energy sector, showcasing its robust capabilities and potential for further expansion in international markets.

Shanghai Electric’s proactive expansion strategy in high-performance gas turbine development signifies its commitment to leading technological advancements and shaping the future of energy production. As the demand for efficient energy solutions grows globally, the company’s latest achievement is expected to set the stage for more projects in the future, reinforcing its status as a key player in the international energy arena.

Furthermore, this contract not only enhances Shanghai Electric’s portfolio but also emphasizes the increasing trust of international markets in their technology and services. The success of the Samalaju project could very well lead to further collaborations and reinforce the company's reputation on a global scale, ensuring a sustainable, reliable energy future.
