Sawdust Art Festival: Celebrating 60 Years of Laguna Beach’s Creative Community

A Celebration of Art and Community in Laguna Beach

This summer, Laguna Beach will celebrate a significant milestone as the famed Sawdust Art Festival turns 60 years old. Founded in 1965 by local artists, this community-centric festival has become a cornerstone of Southern California's artistic scene.

From June 26 to September 6, the festival returns to its beautiful eucalyptus-lined canyon grounds, ready to attract thousands of locals and visitors alike. With roots deep in the community, the Sawdust Art Festival has always been about showcasing the talents of artists who call Laguna Beach home. Jay Grant, the board president and a member of the festival since its inception, reflects on its humble beginnings: "We didn't know if Sawdust would last, but the creative energy was palpable. Artists and musicians came together, and it felt like magic. That spirit of authenticity and passion still thrives today."

The festival stands out for its commitment to the hands-on experience of art. Guests can explore open-air pathways filled with live music, artist demonstrations, and unique handcrafted pieces. This year's showing will include over 180 local artists, many of whom have participated for decades, ensuring a rich tapestry of talent and creativity.

The festival isn't just about visual art; it creates a space where connections blossom. Attendees have the opportunity to engage with artists directly, allowing for a deeper appreciation of the work on display. Thomas Hartmann, the general manager, emphasizes, "What makes Sawdust special is that it retains its original spirit – a place for artists and community members to come together, celebrate creativity, and discover something unexpected."

To mark the 60th anniversary, the festival will feature a partnership with Earth Shoes, highlighting craftsmanship and innovative expression. Additionally, culinary experiences will be enhanced with local dining concepts such as The Cove by Starfish, offering delicious bites from sushi to dim sum, as well as beloved local favorites like AhbA and Taco Loco.

In line with its mission of supporting the arts, the Sawdust Art Festival is also committed to year-round community engagement, providing art classes, workshops, and philanthropic initiatives that support local schools and underserved populations through the Sawdust Enrichment Fund. This emphasis on education and accessibility is a testament to the festival's belief that everyone should have the chance to experience the joy of creativity.

For art lovers, families, and anyone looking to immerse themselves in a vibrant community of creators, the Sawdust Art Festival promises an unforgettable experience. As Jay Grant puts it, "This milestone is not just about the festival, but about the generations of artists and community members who have made Sawdust what it is today. It's a celebration of creativity and connection, a living testament to the power of art across decades."
