Surf Dogs Make Waves at the 21st Annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon Event

Surf's Up for the Canine Competitors!

Today marks a significant day for dog lovers and surf enthusiasts as more than 50 surfing dogs hit the waves at the beautiful Del Mar Dog Beach for the much-anticipated 21st annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon, presented by Blue Buffalo. This beloved event not only showcases the incredible surfing skills of our four-legged friends but also raises vital funds for orphan pets at the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

A Unique Celebration of Paws and Waves

The Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon is renowned as the longest-running dog surfing competition in the world. It began as a fun celebration of canine courage and surfing prowess and has transformed into a cherished tradition. Every year, it garners substantial attention as dog lovers witness these paw-some athletes paddling, riding, and catching waves in an exhilarating display of skill and spirit. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. PST, promising a fun-filled day for families and pets alike!

How the Competition Works

The enthusiastic canine competitors will face the surf in heats lasting 10 minutes each. A panel of experienced surf pros and passionate dog aficionados will judge the participants on a variety of skills, including ride length, wave technique, eagerness, and confidence on the board. Each weight class will see winners crowned, with the top contenders moving on to the ultimate showdown known as the Best-In-Surf finals!

In addition to the main event, competitors can enter the Freestyle Surf Contest, where creativity rules. Dogs can perform in exciting categories like Duos and Trios, featuring pairs or trios sharing a surfboard, or the Peeps and Pups Tandem Competition, where dogs team up with their favorite humans to share the waves.

Family Fun and Community Spirit

Waves are only part of the excitement. The event also features several beachside activities, entertainment, and a special ceremony honoring legendary Surf Dogs like Sugar, Faith, and Delilah. The awards ceremony at the end of the day will celebrate the champions and their accolades, adding a rewarding conclusion to an exhilarating competition.

A heartwarming aspect of the Surf-A-Thon is its commitment to saving lives. Every wave ridden helps create a second chance for orphan pets in need, with proceeds supporting the invaluable work of the Helen Woodward Animal Center. The organization, a private, non-profit entity, has been working tirelessly since 1972 to help animals and the community, providing services to over 90,000 individuals and 10,000 animals annually.

To catch all the action, portions of the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon—including the ‘Best in Surf’ Heat at noon—will be streamed live on Facebook for those unable to attend in person.

This year’s Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon captures the spirit of community, philanthropy, and of course, fun for both humans and dogs alike. It's not just an event; it’s a reminder of the joy pets bring into our lives and the impact we can have when we come together for a good cause.
