Okayama University Hosts Exciting Science Workshop for Young Students

An Exciting Day of Science at Okayama University

On August 26, 2026, Okayama University, under the leadership of the Technical Department, partnered with the Sankaku Okayama Center to host an innovative workshop titled Kid's Sankaku Seminar 2026: Engineering Experiment Classroom — Exciting Science Craft Lab! This event was aimed at elementary school students and sparked their curiosity about science and engineering.

Seventeen enthusiastic young participants from grades 4 to 6, along with their families, gathered for this event at the Sankaku Okayama Center, a venue dedicated to promoting gender equality in the community. They kicked off the session with a warm welcome from the center's manager, followed by talks on gender equality from staff members. This introduction set a positive tone for the hands-on activities that followed.

The workshop offered three engaging projects: creating pet bottle kaleidoscopes, making bath bombs, and designing bookmarks through chromatography. As the children dived into their projects, their focused expressions and laughter filled the room.

During the bath bomb session, the excitement was palpable as the kids eagerly mixed ingredients, keen to see their creations fizz in water. When it came to the pet bottle kaleidoscopes, the children's dedication was evident as they meticulously selected beads to craft their unique designs. The chromatography project mesmerized both the children and the staff as they watched ink colors separate and spread, showcasing the magic of science.

Yoko Ikue, a technician at Okayama University and first-time collaborator on this workshop, shared her experience: “I was responsible for the chromatography bookmark creation. Seeing the ink from one color transform into a spectrum made them say, ‘I want to create this pattern!’ and their creativity flowed throughout the project. It's heartening to think we can share the fascinating aspects of science with so many children.”

Director Masafumi Sato from the Technical Department expressed his joy at inspiring the children's curiosity, stating, “I'm thrilled that we could once again bring excitement and wonder to these children. We plan to continue engaging in activities that foster curiosity in various settings. It would be the greatest joy for us to hear these children someday say, 'That experiment class was so much fun!'”

Not only does the Technical Department focus on local community contributions, but they also emphasize science promotion activities in collaboration with the engineering faculty. Their mission is to open pathways for the next generation to engage with science in enjoyable and intriguing ways, making it accessible to all children.
