HCLTech Awards $1 Million to Three NGOs for Climate Solutions
HCLTech, a prominent global technology firm, has recently concluded its second edition of the HCLTech Grant Americas, announcing that it will provide a total of $1 million to three non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused on fighting climate change. This initiative, which emphasizes scalable and sustainable solutions, aims to address the urgent need for climate action across the continent.
The lucky recipient of the largest grant, totaling $500,000, is
Osa Conservation, based in Costa Rica. This organization is dedicated to creating climate rescue corridors that facilitate the migration and thriving of species amid the challenges posed by climate change. Their project aims to reconnect fragmented tropical habitats, thereby enhancing climate adaptation while protecting extensive ecosystems.
Daily Acts, a California-based NGO, and
Ocean Wise, located in Canada, were both awarded $250,000 for their respective projects. Daily Acts plans to utilize its funds to enhance community-driven climate resilience initiatives. This involves a blend of governmental strategies and grassroots actions to improve water management, rainwater mitigation, and social infrastructure in neighborhoods like Petaluma, California, and beyond.
Meanwhile, Ocean Wise is channeling its grant towards a project focused on restoring kelp forests along the Pacific Coast. By tackling the overpopulation of sea urchins and incorporating advanced technology along with ecological research, they aim to boost marine biodiversity and support coastal communities.
The announcement follows a significant increase in applications totaling an impressive 70%. HCLTech’s Senior Vice President of Global CSR, Dr. Nidhi Pundhir, expressed enthusiasm regarding this year's awardees, stating that their initiatives are vital for reconnecting natural habitats and revitalizing marine ecosystems throughout the Americas.
The application process attracted a record number of participants from ten eligible American countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and the United States. The rise in submissions underscores the growing urgency to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and highlights the necessity of supporting initiatives that pave the way for a sustainable future.
In its inaugural year in 2023, the HCLTech Climate Action Grant in the Americas allocated $5 million in grants over five years to assist in developing solutions to combat the climate crisis. This grant reflects HCLTech's ongoing commitment to global sustainability, backed by a total investment exceeding $175 million in CSR programs to date.
HCLTech’s dedication to creating a positive environmental impact has been recognized widely. For its sustainable business practices, the company was celebrated as an industry leader in the
SP Global Sustainability Yearbook 2023. This commitment remains evident through active collaborations with prominent organizations in the U.S., such as Feeding America and Girl Up, contributing to community service and environmental stewardship.
