AI Technology Enhances Passenger Experience at Ueno Station with Real-Time Congestion Visualization

Enhancing Commuter Experience at Ueno Station with AI

In a bid to address congestion at one of Tokyo's busiest transport hubs, JR East has launched a pilot project at Ueno Station, collaborating with VACAN, a company pioneering in congestion visualization technology. This initiative aims to enhance the commuting experience through real-time data dissemination, allowing passengers to make better-informed decisions while navigating the station.

Background of the Project

Ueno Station is a crucial transport node in Tokyo's northern region, serving major lines such as the Yamanote Line, Keihin-Tohoku Line, and various Shinkansen lines. Given the high volume of passenger traffic, especially near the 'Midori no Madoguchi' ticket counters, congestion often becomes an issue. VACAN, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, with CEO Tsuyoshi Kawano at the helm, undertakes this project designed to utilize its expertise in congestion data detection and analysis.

Implementation of the System

To achieve the objective of improving passenger satisfaction, VACAN has started deploying its congestion information dissemination platform, 'VACAN,' at Ueno Station. The pilot focuses on three key areas: two locations at the 'Midori no Madoguchi' and one at the designated seat ticket machine. By providing real-time displays of waiting times via digital signage, passengers are encouraged to utilize alternative purchasing methods like mobile ticketing, which aims to alleviate crowding and reduce waiting times across the station. Furthermore, the system extends its capabilities to a website, allowing users to access congestion information before they arrive at the station.

Features of the VACAN System

The heart of this initiative lies in the AI camera and sensor technology that VACAN has integrated at Ueno Station. Utilizing the 'VACAN AIS' feature, the system captures queue status and enables visualization of congestion levels through real-time analysis. Digital displays placed inside and outside the station enable travelers to quickly and easily check current wait times at their convenience.

About VACAN’s Congestion Information Platform

VACAN’s platform is a comprehensive solution for visualization, management, and dissemination of congestion data. It integrates data from various sources such as cameras and sensors, allowing for real-time tracking of availability and crowdedness. This flexibility in data collection means that the platform adapts to different locations and environments optimally.

Company Background

Founded in June 2016 and recognized as a J-Startup 2019 by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, VACAN continues to pursue its mission: "Connecting people and spaces gently through technology." The company's offerings include crowd and pedestrian flow management services, facility management platforms, and even media services like 'Unveil,' which focuses on restroom privacy.

By leveraging AI and innovative technology, VACAN seeks to enhance urban experiences, redefining how individuals interact with their environments.
