The National Elementary School Programming Championship Zero One Grand Slam 2025
The much-anticipated web qualifiers for the National Elementary School Programming Championship, known as the Zero One Grand Slam, is set to begin on August 25, 2025. This flagship event, organized by Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions in collaboration with the Junior Programming Promotion Organization, has established itself as a premier platform for elementary school students across Japan to showcase their programming skills.
This year's championship will mark the fourth iteration of this prestigious tournament, building on its success from previous years where over 5,000 students have participated. The web qualifiers will run from August 25 to September 23, allowing students to participate for free from anywhere in the country.
New Features for 2025
The 2025 championship introduces an exciting new feature: participants can now attempt the web qualifiers as many times as they wish! This change allows students to better showcase their programming skills and encourages greater participation from budding programmers. Whether you are a seasoned programmer or just starting your journey, this competition is an excellent opportunity for all elementary school students.
Route to the Finals
After successfully advancing past the web qualifiers and an online round, selected contestants will compete in person at the second round, which will feature both visual programming and robotics competitions. The top performers will progress to the championship finals scheduled for December 7, 2025.
Second Round Venue Information
- - Kansai Venue: October 26, 2025, at TV Osaka, Multipurpose Hall, Osaka City
- - Kanto Venue: November 2, 2025, at Yamaha Motor Regenerative Lab, Yokohama City
Thrilling Competitions Await
This year’s championship will see enhanced versions of popular competitions based on last year’s excitement. Contestants will engage in real-time challenges during the first round with live Scratch coding sessions, where they must replicate a provided programming model within a set time limit, testing both their accuracy and speed.
In the second round, competitors will take part in two major sections:
1.
Scratch Competitions: Building on last year's hits, the modified Zero-G Hackathon and Zero-G Debugging Challenge will test creativity and problem-solving skills under time constraints.
2.
Robotics Competitions: A unique multi-species format featuring three distinct robots—Arteck Robo, KOOV, and SPIKE Prime—will compete under unified rules, providing an exciting twist to traditional robotics contests.
Sponsorship and Support
This year's event is proudly sponsored by Yamaha Motor Co., along with several other well-known companies including Cygames, Coly, DeNA, Bandai, and Bandai Namco Entertainment. The championship also has the backing of the Ministry of Education, providing a solid foundation for the growth of programming education and the development of young programmers.
Connection to the Future
The Zero One Grand Slam aims to create a vibrant environment where young minds can thrive through programming competitions that mirror the intensity and excitement of sports. Participants will not only enhance their coding skills but also foster critical skills such as logical thinking and problem-solving—abilities essential in their future endeavors.
