Liberty Petroleum Reveals Potential Helium Reserves Amid Growing Global Shortage
In recent developments, Liberty Petroleum Corporation has announced potential helium reserves in Western Australia's Officer Basin, adding a crucial layer to the ongoing discussions about global helium shortages. As this resource is increasingly important for several critical sectors—including hospitals, semiconductor manufacturing, and defense systems—the implications of this discovery could be far-reaching, especially in light of recent production challenges in other regions.
Liberty Petroleum, along with its affiliate Petro Quest Australia, holds exploration rights to over 20 million acres in a zone primarily known for oil and gas. However, detailed analyses carried out by Dr. Stuart Lake, Chief Consulting Geologist at Liberty, suggest that this area may also conceal significant helium reserves. The estimates presented indicate a risked resource potential that could reach up to
11 billion barrels of oil equivalent and
7.4 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Moreover, initial evaluations regarding
22 mapped prospects have hinted at helium reserves potentially nearing
959 billion cubic feet.
Lane Franks, co-founder and CEO of Liberty Petroleum, stressed the importance of this discovery. He stated, “The petroleum potential of this area is significant, and it's becoming clear that the added potential for helium and hydrogen could rival the value of the oil and gas resource itself.” This insight comes at a time when analysts are describing the current helium shortage as among the most severe in history following geopolitical disruptions in helium-producing nations.
In March 2026, Iranian strikes on Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City severely compromised helium production at the Pearl GTL facility. Qatar, which traditionally supplies close to one-third of global helium, faced substantial output reductions, impacting numerous sectors dependent on this crucial element. The attacks not only damaged facilities but also hindered liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capabilities by about
17%, with complete repairs unlikely to occur for several years.
Adding to the urgency, the United States recently sold off its Federal Helium Reserve in Amarillo, Texas, in 2024, which had been a central stockpile for domestic helium availability. This shortage has highlighted helium's unique position as an irreplaceable element—essential for technologies ranging from MRI machines to various defense applications.
Trent Franks, board chairman at Liberty and a former U.S. congressman, emphasized the strategic importance of helium, characterizing it as a “hidden chokepoint in chip fabrication and a host of other technologies and weapon systems.” The loss of this invaluable resource can have implications not just for technology sectors but also for national security.
Given these dynamics, Liberty Petroleum and its partner, Mangat Group, are taking steps to adjust their exploration strategy that initially focused solely on petroleum. They are now exploring the extension of their drilling plans to also seek helium and hydrogen. President of Mangat Group, Tony Mangat, remarked, “If we're able to confirm helium and hydrogen reserves at the scale we hope for, this is a footprint large enough to move the needle on a worldwide shortage.”
Liberty is advocating a conventional drilling approach that eschews methods such as fracking, focusing instead on shallow well targets. The company is currently finalizing Native Title agreements with Aboriginal groups, which is expected to facilitate the necessary regulatory processes for drilling permits in Western Australia.
This exploration endeavor not only represents Liberty Petroleum's commitment to resource sustainability but also signifies a strategic decision to diversify energy discovery methods in response to global supply chain challenges.
