CATL and Quinbrook Enhance Their Partnership in Supernode Project



In a significant step towards advancing energy storage solutions, CATL and Quinbrook have reached pivotal milestones in their Supernode battery storage project. The Supernode initiative, located in Brendale, north of Brisbane, represents a substantial investment in Australia's energy future, marking a new chapter in renewable energy infrastructure.

Overview of the Supernode Project


The Supernode project aims to establish a state-of-the-art battery energy storage system, designed to support Queensland's accelerating energy transition. Recently, Quinbrook announced the completion of Stage 2 of their commercial operations, along with securing financial closure on an impressive A$469 million for Stage 3. This brings the total funding for the Supernode project to approximately A$1.2 billion across all phases.

With an anticipated capacity exceeding 3 GWh, the Supernode will provide essential support to the regional electricity grid. Positioned near the South Pine substation, this facility is critical to the Queensland energy network, enabling the integration of renewable energy sources and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Significant Financial Milestones


The completion of Stage 2 operations signifies not only technical progress, reflecting the achievement of both contracted phases, but also financial continuity for the ambitious project. The total capacity after the first three stages is projected to reach 780 MW / 3,074 MWh, underscoring the strategic importance of Supernode in equipping Australia with scalable energy solutions.

The completion of Stage 3 funding demonstrates the confidence of Quinbrook's banking partners in the Supernode project and highlights its promising long-term value. Enhancements to the project's design have also been made possible through CATL's involvement, particularly in optimizing real estate efficiency and reducing on-site space requirements by approximately 20%.

Collaborative Efforts for Reliable Operations


CATL's engagement extends beyond mere supply of energy storage systems, as they are committed to ensuring that the Supernode operates efficiently throughout its lifecycle. Their LTSA (Long-Term Service Agreement) will ensure comprehensive support through monitoring, performance tracking, rapid fault response, and preventive maintenance.
