Shanghai Electric Showcases Energy Transition Solutions at Enlit Asia 2026
In the vibrant city of Jakarta, the Enlit Asia 2026 conference ran from September 22 to 24, gathering more than 11,000 attendees and 280 exhibitors from the Southeast Asian energy sector. Under the theme "Energy of the Archipelago," Shanghai Electric, a pioneer in advanced energy solutions, unveiled three groundbreaking strategies aimed at addressing the region's pressing energy transition challenges.
Addressing ASEAN's Energy Transition Needs
The solutions presented by Shanghai Electric are crafted to meet critical regional energy demands, focusing on reducing carbon emissions from existing thermal power plants, improving the integration of renewable energies, maintaining stability in isolated power grids, and providing low-carbon fuels for maritime and aviation sectors.
One of the flagship solutions emphasizes high energy efficiency and decarbonization, specifically designed to assist markets like Indonesia in lowering their carbon intensity. This entails the modernization of existing units, transitioning to new energy sources, and optimizing systems. Shanghai Electric's modular steam turbines for H-class and F-class combined cycle systems are tailored to meet both electricity and heating needs while enhancing efficiency and minimizing overall costs. Additionally, high-capacity gas turbines capable of operating with a mix of up to 30% hydrogen are included in this offering, as well as coal plant modernization solutions aimed at improving thermal efficiency and decreasing coal consumption to lessen carbon footprints.
Resilience and Modernization of Power Networks
The company's modernization strategy also addresses challenges associated with integrating renewable energy, frequency regulation, and voltage stability in isolated power networks. It incorporates synchronous condensers, flywheels, multi-technology energy storage systems, and integrated solar power generation and storage modules. This combination provides rapid frequency response and inertial support. The multi-technology storage systems accommodate various applications from short to long duration, and the energy production modules ensure reliable, clean backup power for isolated regions and critical loads.
Moreover, building on the successful Taonan project in Jilin Province, Shanghai Electric introduced integrated electricity conversion solutions covering the entire production chain. This includes wind and solar energy generation, green hydrogen, biomass gasification, and green methanol synthesis. The Taonan project, a remarkable achievement, produced 8,000 tons of green methanol, setting a world record for a single refueling operation. The Phase II initiative, launched on August 20, 2026, aims for an annual production of 200,000 tons of green methanol and 10,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel.
Extending Low-Carbon Fuel Solutions to ASEAN Markets
The company is now extending these innovative solutions to maritime and aviation sectors in ASEAN, promoting the procurement of low-carbon fuel and aiding in the decarbonization of transportation. With a strong regional presence, Shanghai Electric’s energy technologies and systems draw from a well-established foundation in Southeast Asia, where the company has implemented significant projects in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
Examples of these pioneering projects include the 3x350 MW coal-fired power plant in Pelabuhan Ratu, Indonesia, the renewable energy plant in Selangor, Malaysia, and a recent 500 MW combined cycle gas power plant in Samalaju, Sarawak, Malaysia. These projects not only demonstrate Shanghai Electric's integrated capabilities in modernizing traditional power plants but also in efficiently generating electricity from gas, renewable energies, and green fuels.
Commitment to a Collaborative Future
During Enlit Asia 2026, Shanghai Electric actively participated in the official conference program, delivering a technical presentation titled "High-Power Gas Turbine Technology for Clean, Efficient, and Intelligent Power Generation." This session outlined the company's technological roadmap and its tailored solutions for the regional context regarding high-power gas turbines and combined cycle systems. The company also organized several presentations and exchange activities, inviting representatives from PLN (the Indonesian national electricity company), local clients, and energy sector academics to discuss energy source diversification and the development of Indonesia's power grid.
Going forward, Shanghai Electric is committed to leveraging its expertise in energy equipment manufacturing and system solutions to collaborate with partners across ASEAN. The aim is to support the transition toward more efficient, stable, and lower-carbon energy systems throughout Southeast Asia, ensuring a sustainable energy future that aligns with global decarbonization goals.
