Global Youth Experience Chinese-style Modernization in Guizhou Province
Witnessing Modernization in Guizhou
The Tsinghua Global Youth Dialogue 2025 unfolded from July 2 to 6 in the captivating province of Guizhou, China. Over 20 young leaders and representatives from various continents gathered under the theme "Opportune China, Youth Talks: Insights into Chinese Modernization from Guizhou Practice." This event highlighted Guizhou's role as a beacon for modernization, intertwining culture, tradition, and technology in an inspiring manner.
Everyone involved echoed the sentiment of Nhial Deng, a Kenyan participant, who exclaimed, "This has been an incredible experience! China has showcased not only its rapid economic growth but also how culture and technology can coexist beautifully."
The youth engaged in immersive experiences throughout this mountainous province, renowned for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. They explored the renowned Huangguoshu Waterfall, the largest in Asia, where participants expressed awe at the majestic splendor of nature. "You can truly feel the harmony between humans and nature here," one participant reflected, expressing a desire for global communities to live in greater harmony with their environments.
Aside from natural wonders, the youth examined the significance of technological innovation in tackling one of the world's pressing challenges: climate change. Ignacio, an organizer from Jovenes por el Clima, remarked, "Seeing nature up close instills a desire to protect it; this is something the entire world needs to embrace."
The Guizhou trip demonstrated China's commitment to sustainable development. During a visit to Gui'an New Area, participants experienced a self-driving minibus developed by local company PIX Moving, showcasing vehicles designed with sustainability in mind. This aligns with China's broader goal: to protect its landscapes while maximizing economic growth with minimal environmental impact.
The cultural richness of Guizhou was also on display at the "Xiu Li Tao" intangible cultural heritage market in Kaili City. Here, youth donned traditional costumes and participated in the Village Runway Show, captivating audiences with the graceful fusion of modern fashion and ethnic tradition. The market features over 6,000 types of local crafts, such as batik and Miao embroidery, serving as a vibrant museum of intangible cultural heritage.
Weekly productions of the Village Runway Show highlight Guizhou’s traditional beauty, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural roots through storytelling and performance. Nadhira, among the ASEAN Youth Organization, shared during a cultural dialogue, “The diverse and inclusive nature of Chinese civilization conveys profound meaning to modernization.”
In another enlightening segment, Emeline Yehyun Lee, a researcher from South Korea, emphasized how Guizhou's innovative approach to technology aims to benefit all levels of society, particularly marginalized groups. Solutions, she argues, must focus on improving the lives of people first, not just driving profit.
Visiting the Bailin River Guizhou Bridge Technology Museum, delegates learned about modern infrastructure innovations and how digital technologies drive the development of this region. Guizhou's narrative is one of transformation—from an underdeveloped province into a pivotal player in digital economic development, presenting a model of success worthy of emulation.
Fyodor Dmitrenko, a participant from Cyprus, underscored the importance of this journey. "Guizhou serves as a bridge not just physically, but also culturally, breaking down barriers and showcasing a path to the future."
As the youth concluded their explorative journey, they departed with meaningful insights into Chinese-style modernization, ready to share the beauty and potential of Guizhou with the world. Their experiences highlight the symbiotic relationship between tradition and modernity, setting a precedent for sustainable development worldwide.
