Oliver Charles Awarded $10,000 Wilshire Quinn Scholarship
Wilshire Quinn Capital, Inc. has announced the prestigious Wilshire Quinn Musical Arts Scholarship for this year, awarding the $10,000 funding to Oliver Charles, an 18-year-old guitarist from Los Angeles, California. This scholarship will be applied directly to Oliver’s tuition at the renowned Berklee College of Music, where he will embark on his degree in Guitar Performance this upcoming fall.
The selection process saw an impressive range of submissions from numerous talented young musicians across the United States. Each submission reflected the unique passion and individuality that characterizes this new generation of artists. Among these, Oliver's submission distinguished itself through its depth and authenticity.
Oliver’s musical journey began at a remarkably young age. He picked up his first guitar at just two years old and began formal lessons by the age of five. The combination of his innate talent and rigorous training in music theory and composition has transformed what began as child’s play into a lifelong dedication to mastering his craft. In his own words, Oliver describes the guitar as presenting an “endless ceiling of possibility,” which continues to drive his curiosity and passion every day. He notes, “It’s been therapy, a source of courage, and a way to become my best self.”
Raised in Los Angeles amidst a vibrant music scene, Oliver began performing at notable venues by age nine, collaborating with the School of Rock and gracing the stages of iconic locations such as The Troubadour and Whisky a Go-Go. His online presence is equally impressive; he has cultivated a YouTube community boasting nearly 50,000 subscribers, all dedicated to his guitar content. During high school, Oliver not only founded a rock band within his school but also organized guitar ensembles and secured performances, including original music showcases at Harvelle's Blues Club in Santa Monica.
Musically, Oliver draws influence from an array of artists, including guitar legends Jason Becker, John Petrucci, and Marcin, alongside classical giants like Frédéric Chopin. He strives to maintain both technical proficiency and a deep appreciation for the beauty found within music.
Looking forward, Oliver expresses enthusiasm for joining various ensembles at Berklee, where he aims to engage in improvisation, arrangement, and collaboration with fellow musicians who share his passion. His ultimate dream is to perform in front of diverse audiences and create thoughtful connections through his art.
Christopher M. Garcia, CEO of Wilshire Quinn Capital, shared his admiration for Oliver, stating, “We are moved by Oliver's story, talent, and the intentionality behind his musical endeavors. Congratulations to Oliver Charles; we eagerly anticipate the impact he will make in the music world.”
