Tokyo's New GAP Initiative Showcased at the 21st Food Fair 2026
The Tokyo Agriculture and Fisheries Promotion Foundation, commissioned by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, will have a booth at the upcoming
21st Food Fair 2026 held at Makuhari Messe on February 18, 19, and 20, 2026. This booth will highlight the unique
New Tokyo GAP (Good Agricultural Practices), a program aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
Understanding New Tokyo GAP
The term GAP stands for
Good Agricultural Practices, which establishes standards and initiatives to ensure food safety, environmental protection, and labor safety throughout the agricultural production process. In other words, it aims to manage agricultural production processes to align with these essential values. Beginning in April 2018, Tokyo has been promoting its unique Tokyo GAP, tailored to the city's urban agricultural characteristics, in accordance with the national GAP guidelines.
In 2023, Tokyo introduced an upgraded version known as the
New Tokyo GAP Certification System, incorporating additional factors like
human rights protection and
agricultural management, setting the standards at an international level.
Benefits of Implementing GAP
1.
Advantages for Farmers: By conducting inspections, maintaining records, and verifying agricultural practices, farmers can visualize their operations. This transparency leads to improved quality, accident prevention, planned production and sales, and enhanced awareness among employees.
2.
Advantages for Distributors: Clear production history ensures traceability, allowing for the secure sale of agricultural products. It also facilitates planning for shipment volume and timing, promoting organized business transactions.
3.
Advantages for Consumers: GAP acts as a guideline for consumers aiming to choose safe and secure agricultural products, connecting them with efforts in sustainability, environmental conservation, and supporting Tokyo agriculture for future generations.
Growing Reach of Certification
As of February 2, 2026,
36 companies have obtained Tokyo GAP certification, while
48 companies have achieved the New Tokyo GAP certification, covering a wide range of agricultural products. These include
44 vegetable varieties,
11 fruit types, and
3 types of tea. Detailed information on certified producers and products can be found on the Tokyo Industrial Labor Bureau's official website.
