Experience the World of Catheter Medical Technology: A Summer Event for Middle and High School Students

Experience the World of Catheter Medical Technology

On July 26, 2025, Sunshine City in Ikebukuro hosted a unique summer event aimed at middle and high school students and their parents, titled "Surprising to See! Worth Touching! Catheter Medical Experience Classroom." Organized by MedCureNation Inc., a medical venture company based in Shizuoka Prefecture, this event allowed participants to gain hands-on experience with catheters, a vital tool in medical practice.

Background of the Event

A recent survey conducted nationwide among high school students revealed that medical-related fields ranked as the fourth most desired area of study at the university level (Survey by TeleMail Shingaku, published April 8, 2025). This indicates a growing interest in medical careers among the youth. In light of this, MedCureNation decided to organize an engaging experience focusing on catheters, aiming to cultivate future healthcare professionals and foster a deeper understanding of Japan's medical technology. The company is currently crowdfunding for cancer treatment methods using catheters, highlighting the fact that many advanced medical technologies are often out of reach for the general public.

With this hands-on experience, we wanted families to discuss healthcare topics more openly at home and deepen their understanding of catheter treatments. We believe such an experience could nurture dialogue about "life" and "health" within families, emphasizing its importance in today's society.

Twenty-four professionals, including 12 medical experts specializing in catheter treatments, guided participants through four distinct experience sections:

1. Angioplasty Experience (PTA): Participants simulated the procedure using a balloon catheter to understand how narrowed blood vessels are widened, learning about the underlying mechanics of vascular repair.
- Participants touched the balloon catheter and learned about its function under medical guidance.

2. Catheter Operation Experience: A model representing the blood vessels of the liver and kidneys allowed participants to navigate guidewires and catheters, providing insight into delicate medical operations.
- Participants learned to guide a thin wire through the catheter with precision.

3. Vascular Embolization Experience: Participants learned about inserting metal coils to block blood flow to tumors or bleeding sites, simulating techniques used to control bleeding and inhibit tumor growth.
- Attendees had hands-on experience with imitation instruments to understand the mechanisms involved.

4. Foreign Object Retrieval Experience: Through this segment, participants learned the process of retrieving foreign objects within the body using catheters, such as remains from medical devices like catheters and pacemaker leads.
- Participants received expert explanations on the retrieval process, enhancing their understanding of these medical challenges.

The event attracted a diverse group of 59 participants, including middle and high school students and adults. Feedback from a post-event survey revealed the following insights:
  • - "I was able to understand aspects that are not clear from the patient's perspective. It's inspiring to see the determination of companies aiming to cure diseases."
  • - "I was surprised by the multitude of catheter types and their various applications. This was a unique opportunity to learn!"
  • - "The explanations based on medical professionals' experiences were compelling and motivated me to prioritize my health."
  • - "My child gained invaluable practical experience that will influence their future career path."
  • - "It was my first time touching a catheter and understanding vascular rigidity, making healthcare feel more relatable."

Reflections on the Event

The "Catheter Medical Experience Classroom" welcomed a wide range of attendees, from students to working professionals. Many participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn about the rarely visible aspects of medical care. Comments such as, "I gained insight into the behind-the-scenes of medicine," and, "The real-world experience helped me in my career considerations," reflect our successful engagement with the audience.

Medical innovation is not solely about cutting-edge technology; it thrives on the passion and ingenuity of the people behind it. Our goal through this experience was to bring healthcare into closer reach for attendees. We aim to continue fostering understanding and interest in medical fields, instilling hope for the future of healthcare in as many people as possible.
