Revving Up Tomorrow's Talent: Automotive Career Day Returns at Chicago Auto Show 2025

The Chicago Auto Show is set to welcome students back for the second annual Automotive Career Day, an event organized by the Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA). Scheduled for February 12, 2025, from 10 AM to 1 PM, this unique opportunity targets primarily high school students, aiming to unveil the diverse array of career pathways present within the automotive industry.

This year's program promises to engage students, featuring a lineup of experienced professionals. Attendees will have the chance to hear from key industry figures, including Aaron Steffen, a technical support engineer, and instructor at BMW, along with Erica Tsypin, who directs fleet solutions and strategic programs at Rivian. This panel will not only shed light on career possibilities but also share insights and experiences that could inspire the next generation of auto professionals.

Adding depth to the program, representatives from student-led engineering organizations such as Illini Solar Car Team, Illini EV Concept, and the Society of Engineers at UIC will participate in discussions. A session will also be led by Nikolas Borrego, a wheeled vehicle mechanic from the U.S. Army, allowing students to connect with diverse backgrounds within the automotive sector.

A Platform for Interaction and Engagement

Following the panel discussions, students will have the opportunity to interact directly with panelists, fostering a networking environment that could cultivate future career paths. With the automotive field rapidly evolving—especially towards electrification—this event could not come at a better time for young minds eager to explore the industry’s future.

Jennifer Morand, General Manager of the Chicago Auto Show, expressed optimism for this year's event. After a successful inaugural career day in 2024, she emphasized the importance of engaging students, saying, "The Chicago Auto Show serves as the perfect venue to introduce students to all of the possibilities in an automotive career." A special ticket price of $10 will be available for attendees, with pre-registration needed to secure a spot.

The Role of Key Sponsors

The event is supported by notable sponsors like Powering Chicago, Rivian, and the U.S. Army. Elbert Walters III, Executive Director of Powering Chicago, remarked on the significant role that trained electrical professionals have in the evolving automotive landscape. He noted, "The automotive industry is experiencing a transformative shift toward electrification... we’re committed to helping develop the next generation of talent," underlining the increasing demand for qualified electricians in areas such as EV charging and advanced manufacturing.

The combination of educational discussions and a hands-on experience at the show will allow students to immerse themselves in the automotive environment. Post-event, they can explore interactive exhibits, including test tracks, and engage with representatives from various auto manufacturers.
