The 26th Sophia University United Nations Weeks

Sophia University, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, is set to hold the 26th edition of its United Nations Weeks from October 5 to October 27, 2026. Since 2014, the university has organized this event twice a year, aimed at contemplating the future of our world through the lens of the UN's activities. The theme for this year's event is particularly focused on global health and peace building.

Among the standout programs is a symposium titled "A Future Without Infectious Diseases by 2045," scheduled for October 5. This session will feature insights from the Gates Foundation, which is dedicated to eradicating infectious diseases by the year 2045. Experts from UNICEF and Sophia University will discuss critical global issues related to infectious diseases, maternal and child health, and children's emergency nutrition. The importance of multilateral cooperation and the roles of the youth in Japan will also be key topics of discussion.

On October 6, the symposium called "Qatar's Peace Mediation" will invite specialists who have been involved in peace negotiations concerning the Iran War, the Gaza conflict, and the Afghanistan War. These experts will explore diplomatic efforts toward conflict resolution and the potential for peace-building in the region.

Additionally, on October 13, a lecture entitled "The Crisis of the Strait of Hormuz: Challenges and Solutions" will address the shifting regional dynamics triggered by the Iran war, as well as Qatar's practical role in facilitating peace initiatives. A special lecture by Qatar's Deputy Foreign Minister will also occur on October 22, focusing on lessons learned from Qatar’s diplomatic efforts amid ongoing conflicts.

The event series includes diverse programming that covers topics such as science and technology innovations, UN reforms, and career development in international cooperation. These activities are designed to engage participants from various backgrounds, including high school students, to open discussions about pressing global challenges.
