Transforming Trash Collection into a Sporty Community Event in Yamagata

Sport GOMI in Nanokamachi 2026: A Fun and Eco-Friendly Community Initiative

In an exciting blend of sport and community service, the 'Sport GOMI in Nanokamachi 2026' event is set to take place in Yamagata City on June 20, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. This innovative event, organized by Fujares Well-Being Partners and several local organizations, aims to enhance community engagement and environmental awareness through the collection of litter.

As part of the event, participants will engage in a unique trash-collection challenge that integrates sports elements, making the activity not only purposeful but also enjoyable. The event is free, and up to 60 teams can participate, each consisting of 2 to 5 members. The gathering will occur at the Hotto Naruhira Square, conveniently located in the heart of Yamagata City.

Utilizing Technology for Environmental Impact

A remarkable aspect of this event is the use of technology to visualize and analyze waste collection. The specially designed 'Rethink Tong,' equipped with wireless camera technology, will help participants track the types and locations of garbage collected. Through a smartphone application, AI will process images to classify the waste, enabling real-time mapping of litter on a digital platform.

This endeavor not only promotes litter collection but also enriches the understanding of waste management within the community, showcasing the importance of environmental stewardship.

A Community Affair to Remember

Sport GOMI is not just about cleaning; it’s about discovering the local area and fostering a sense of attachment to the community. Since its inception, events have witnessed significant participation, such as a previous edition in 2025 that saw 33 teams collecting approximately 24 kg of litter within an hour. This year, participants are encouraged to rediscover Yamagata's charm while being environmentally proactive.

Moreover, the event is a part of Yamagata City’s Health Point Program, known as SUKSK, which further emphasizes the importance of active living and community involvement.

Partnerships and Support

The event is made possible through collaboration with multiple organizations, including Yamagata University and Rethink PROJECT, highlighting the multifaceted approach taken to engage the community in sustainability efforts. Additional support comes from local sponsors, including the Minoru Fruit Farm, exemplifying the communal spirit of this initiative.

The organizing body, Fujares Well-Being Partners, continues to emphasize its dedication to addressing social issues through innovative solutions, establishing themselves as social developers aiming for a sustainable future.
