Qatar's Years of Culture Initiative Expands Global Partnerships Until 2030
In a significant development for international cultural diplomacy, Qatar's
Years of Culture initiative has recently unveiled its partners for the upcoming years, extending through 2030. The latest announcement includes participation from Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal, and Spain, building upon previously established collaborations with Egypt and Greece for 2027. This initiative not only celebrates cultural exchange but also strengthens the bonds between Qatar and various nations through a shared commitment to creativity and social progress.
A Vision for Cultural Diplomacy
Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the chairwoman of the Years of Culture initiative, emphasized the transformative power of cultural exchange saying, “Years of Culture, which is now completing its fifteenth year, continues to foster friendly ties between Qatar and countries around the world through meaningful cultural exchange while supporting our nation’s creative industry and socio-economic development.” This ethos underlines Qatar's belief that cultural collaboration can enhance dialogue and foster international connections, all while cultivating mutual respect across borders.
The
Years of Culture initiative, launched in 2012, aims to extend mutual understanding and establish long-lasting relationships between Qatar and other nations through diverse forms of cultural expression, including arts, heritage, culinary traditions, music, sports, education, and economic partnerships. It acts as a platform that focuses on exchanging ideas and cultivating global connections.
Upcoming Global Partnerships
The dual partnership model began recently with Argentina and Chile in 2025, followed by Canada and Mexico in 2026. The year 2027 is set for collaboration with Egypt and Greece, both of which have rich cultural heritages that continue to shape their vibrant contemporary creative scenes. Programs will be designed for literary exchanges, art exhibitions, musical contributions, and heritage initiatives, starting with Qatar's role as an honorary guest at the
Cairo International Book Fair in January 2027.
In 2028, the partnership will celebrate longstanding cultural ties between Qatar and Italy, focusing on archaeology, fashion, design, and heritage preservation. The 2028 initiative will coincide with the opening of Qatar's permanent national pavilion at the historic
Giardini della Biennale park in Venice, designed by architect Lina Ghotmeh, marking the first new permanent pavilion in the park in 30 years.
The initiative will continue with partnerships in 2029 with the Netherlands and Switzerland—countries known for their humanitarianism, innovation, diplomacy, and design prowess. In 2030, Portugal and Spain will join the program, furthering the tradition of cultural exchange with nations hosting FIFA World Cup events.
Throughout each year, Qatar collaborates closely with cultural institutions, embassies, artists, and educators to present a diverse calendar of exhibitions, festivals, fairs, residencies, academic exchanges, and public events throughout Qatar and its partner nations. Development of programs often begins well before the official year starts and continues long after, creating enduring institutional partnerships, professional networks, and interpersonal relationships.
