Toyota Mobility Foundation Launches Contest for Sustainable Transportation in Fortaleza, Brazil

Supporting Marginalized Communities with Sustainable Mobility

Introduction

The Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF), led by Akio Toyoda, has launched an innovative contest in Fortaleza, Brazil, targeting the development of sustainable and equitable mobility solutions for marginalized communities. In collaboration with organizations like Citinova, Labifor, and WRI Brazil, TMF aims to provide affordable transportation options for the "transportation disadvantaged" who reside in peripheral areas of the city.

The Purpose of the Contest

The primary objective of this contest is to create transportation methods that prioritize safety and reduce commuting times and costs. By improving access to reliable mobility, individuals from low-income backgrounds will find it easier to secure employment and educational opportunities, ultimately working towards breaking the cycle of poverty and reducing disparities.

Collaborative Efforts

The contest is a result of partnership with institutions focused on science, technology, and innovation. Citinova, or the Science, Technology and Innovation Foundation of Fortaleza, Labifor, a research institute in Fortaleza specializing in innovation, and WRI Brazil, a non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. tackling urban transportation and environmental challenges, jointly support this initiative.

The Current Transportation Landscape in Fortaleza

Fortaleza, the capital of the State of Ceará in Brazil's Northeast, is home to around 4 million residents. Public transportation plays a crucial role in the lives of low-income residents, but has faced severe challenges in recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with the rise of Ridesharing services, led to a decrease in demand, highlighting existing disparities and imbalances in access to transportation.

Moreover, there has been an increase in the use of personal vehicles and motorcycles, leading to a corresponding rise in traffic accidents, congestion, and environmental issues. In response, there is a growing need to integrate various forms of transportation beyond just buses and increase the options for bicycles and other alternative modes of transport.

Contest Details

Against the backdrop of these challenges, the contest seeks innovative proposals aimed at improving access to central areas from peri-urban regions, particularly the Grande Scherreira district, while reducing the rate of traffic accidents. The proposal details are as follows:

  • - Application Period: June 30, 2025, to July 27, 2025
  • - Judging and Announcement: Early August 2025
  • - Total Grant Amount: $250,000

Further information is available on the contest's website: Mobilidade Cidada (Portuguese only). Please note that registration as a legal entity in Brazil is required for eligibility.

TMF's Mission and Vision

Since its inception, Toyota has been dedicated to respecting all stakeholders, including customers, business partners, employees, and local communities, aiming to create a prosperous society through mobility. To further enhance its public-oriented initiatives, the TMF was established in August 2014. The foundation focuses on addressing global mobility challenges, engaging in a wide range of projects aimed at achieving a richer society through sustainable mobility solutions.

Conclusion

The action taken by the TMF in Fortaleza represents a significant step in supporting those most in need. By fostering collaboration and innovation, the initiative not only seeks to improve the transportation landscape in the city but also aims to empower underrepresented communities, creating a pathway for social equity and environmental sustainability.
