Launch of the Esophageal Cancer Care Guide Press Seminar
On May 18, 2026, Kango Publishing Co., Ltd. hosted a press seminar at the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to celebrate the publication of the "Esophageal Cancer Care Guide for Patients and Their Families." The seminar featured esteemed speakers from various medical institutions, aiming to shed light on the advancements in esophageal cancer treatment and the importance of patient involvement in care decisions.
Keynote Speakers
The seminar showcased the expertise of Dr. Yuya Takeuchi, President of Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, and Dr. Ken Kato, Head of the Department of Otolaryngology and Esophagus at the National Cancer Center. The discussion was also enriched by Kenjiro Takagi, representative of the Esophageal Cancer Survivors Sharing group.
Dr. Takeuchi opened the seminar by summarizing the fundamental aspects of esophageal cancer, including its epidemiology and treatment outcomes. He emphasized that Japan boasts some of the lowest 30-day mortality rates post-esophagectomy globally, highlighting the nation's position in the top tier for treatment success. This is attributed to multidisciplinary collaboration and effective perioperative management.
However, the pressing issues of patient isolation and information discrepancies were also presented. Many patients express confusion immediately following their diagnosis, unsure of necessary actions or crucial questions for their doctors. These revelations spotlighted the pervasive gaps in information that patients face.
From Guidelines to Guides: A Patient-Centric Approach
Dr. Kato explained that while medical guidelines are essential, simply providing these to patients often leads to misunderstandings and non-utilization. Thus, the new guide has been reformulated to resonate more closely with the realities of patients and their families.
He elaborated on key information that needs to be communicated to patients, including:
- - What to understand immediately after diagnosis
- - Questions to ask the primary physician
- - Seeking second opinions
- - Navigating post-operative processes
- - Managing complications related to post-operative care and nutrition
- - Understanding palliative care and lifestyle support
The guide incorporates insights from a patient survey conducted in November 2024, compiling 216 responses that illuminate both helpful information and instances of confusion experienced by patients and their families.
Empowering Patients: Collaborative Efforts with Patient Groups
Kenjiro Takagi discussed the importance of patient groups in addressing feelings of isolation and serving as a valuable resource for individuals facing esophageal cancer. He shared how their collaborative approach focuses on:
- - Informative YouTube videos
- - Patient support meetings
- - Awareness campaigns
- - Distribution of free informational booklets
- - Dedicated communication through official LINE channels, reaching over 1,600 users
The new guide also includes practical tools, like a checklist for patients and families to facilitate their involvement in treatment decisions and daily management of their health.
"Our aim is to be a guiding tool for patients and their families, even amidst the confusion following a diagnosis," Takagi stated.
