The Opening of Ellinikon Sports Park: A New Era for Urban Regeneration in Europe

The Grand Opening of Ellinikon Sports Park

The Ellinikon Sports Park, part of Europe's largest urban regeneration project, officially opened its doors to the public on August 11, 2026. Spearheaded by LAMDA Development, this sports park is a pillar of the transformation of the former Athens International Airport into a vibrant coastal city. Spanning an impressive 287,000 square meters, it stands as a beacon of accessibility, welcoming athletes, families, and tourists alike.

The park showcases the belief that sports and wellness are crucial in crafting a '15-minute city' — a concept that emphasizes livability and convenience. With facilities for both high-performance and recreational athletes, the park features a finished athletics complex, football fields, tennis and basketball courts, recreational areas, athletes' accommodations, and extensive landscaped green spaces totaling 115,000 square meters.

The venue has already proven its capabilities, hosting thousands for the EKO Super Special Stage of the FIA World Rally Championship, giving the public a taste of the international competitions and community events to come.

Odisseas Athanasiou, CEO of LAMDA Development, remarked on the significance of this opening, stating, "This marks an important milestone for Ellinikon, truly opening its doors to the public and allowing citizens to experience first-hand the transformative lifestyle aspects unfolding within this vast urban renewal project. It reflects years of vision, perseverance, and conviction in our objectives."

Ongoing Developments

As the sports park opens, further construction is gaining momentum in various districts of The Ellinikon, with residential neighborhoods expanding and iconic shopping centers nearing completion.

One notable project is The Courtyards, a new residential proposal in Little Athens, designed by AUDO Architects. This development comprises 324 modern homes across 11 buildings, featuring one to four-bedroom apartments, some with rooftop terraces, and others with private gardens equipped with pools or Jacuzzis. Completion of these homes is expected by early 2027, with model residences already available for viewing, showcasing the high-quality design and craftsmanship that The Ellinikon promises.

Retail Expansion

In addition to residential spaces, The Ellinikon boasts the upcoming Riviera Galleria, an upscale shopping and dining experience designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma. Covering 23,000 square meters, it aims to blend international and local trends, set to be completed by early 2027. With 76% of its rental space already pre-leased, this center is poised to become a focal point for activity both day and night.

Meanwhile, the construction of The Ellinikon Mall is underway. This ambitious project is intended to become Greece's largest and most modern shopping venue, designed to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces harmoniously. With 100,000 square meters of retail space, the mall's construction has recently commenced, and it's already seeing strong pre-lease interest covering 70% of the total rental area. The mall aims to redefine shopping, combining luxury brands with entertainment and public greens.

Conclusion

The opening of The Ellinikon Sports Park symbolizes the rapid progress of one of the world's most ambitious mixed-use developments. As construction continues across all sectors — residential, commercial, and recreational — The Ellinikon is set to redefine urban living in Athens.
