DeTect to Enhance Bird Detection at Indonesia’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport with Advanced Radar Technology

DeTect's Innovative Radars at Soekarno-Hatta Airport

DeTect, Inc. has recently announced a significant contract win that will see the installation of its state-of-the-art MERLIN 7360 True3D bird detection radars at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. This contract includes placing radars at the ends of both runways, effectively ensuring comprehensive 3D coverage of the airport's airspace and surrounding environment.

The MERLIN True3D system is recognized as one of the most advanced bird detection technologies available today. With over 600 units currently in operation globally, it serves critical roles in aviation safety and wildlife protection. Originally developed for military use by the U.S. Air Force and NASA, these radar systems have demonstrated their capability in identifying hazardous bird and drone activities near airports. This technology is already utilized by various airports across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia to enhance safety protocols.

The deployment of this radar system in Jakarta is expected to bolster the airport's wildlife management program significantly. It will provide real-time alerts to air traffic control and airport operations teams regarding potential hazards posed by bird activity. The automatic notifications will be displayed on screens installed in bird control vehicles, the aerodrome operations center, and the control tower, ensuring a swift response to any threats detected.

Gary Andrews, the CEO of DeTect, expressed his enthusiasm for this collaboration with InJourney Airports, highlighting the importance of integrating such advanced safety measures at one of Southeast Asia's busiest airports. He emphasized that the effective management of bird activity is crucial for maintaining safety in aviation, particularly in a bustling environment like Soekarno-Hatta.

In addition to the MERLIN systems, DeTect's portfolio includes various other radar technologies, including HARRIER security and surveillance radars, DroneWatcher systems for drone countermeasures, and aircraft detection lighting systems. Since its establishment in 2003, DeTect has manufactured and deployed over 1,100 radar systems across multiple continents, showcasing its position as a leader in radar technology.

As Jakarta moves forward with this installation, the integration of the MERLIN True3D radars not only signifies a commitment to safety but also enhances the overall operational efficiency of the airport. This initiative is pivotal in setting a precedent for wildlife management in aviation, potentially influencing other airports facing similar challenges globally.
