Global Housing Crisis: Most People Cut Essentials to Afford Shelter

The Severe Impact of the Global Housing Crisis

A recent global report released by Habitat for Humanity International sheds light on an alarming trend affecting millions worldwide: the struggle to afford housing. The study, titled "Home at What Cost?", reveals that 75% of survey respondents have made sacrifices in essential expenditures to keep a roof over their heads. This comprehensive research involved 30,758 individuals spanning 22 different countries, presenting a stark reality about the implications of the escalating housing costs.

Key Findings of the Report

The findings underscore that the total cost of housing extends well beyond just rent or mortgage payments; it encapsulates the necessary trade-offs people must navigate to secure a home. Many respondents reported reducing spending on critical items:
  • - 33% spent less on groceries.
  • - 32% dipped into savings or emergency funds.
  • - 13% postponed or avoided medical care.

Among those already living in precarious conditions, the pressures are even more profound. For instance, 89% of individuals in informal housing situations felt the strain of this crisis. Additionally, members of younger generations, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, reported significant pressures, with 81% acknowledging the need to cut back on essentials due to housing costs.

Housing Stability Concerns

The report further emphasizes a troubling statistic: nearly 48% of people globally indicated that a single unexpected problem could jeopardize their housing stability. The inability to afford safe housing leads many to compromise on security, with 40% admitting they risk unsafe living conditions due to financial constraints. Furthermore, confidence in the housing system is plummeting, as 56% express belief that housing in their country is broken or failing them.

Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, poignantly stated: "A home should never come at the cost of your health or your future; it should anchor your health, opportunities, and financial security." He emphasized the urgent need for collective action from governments, businesses, and communities to develop housing systems that enable people to build a future rather than merely survive.

What the Data Reveals About Future Aspirations

Beyond mere financial calculations, the repercussions of oppressive housing costs extend into people's life decisions and long-term prospects. A significant 56% of respondents indicated that housing expenses deter them from contemplating starting a family, a concern more prevalent among younger adults, rising to 62% within Gen Z and Millennials. Additionally, approximately 58% of parents feel that these costs are adversely affecting their children's opportunities—a stark reflection of how housing affordability influences crucial life milestones.

The concerns regarding homeownership are especially pronounced in higher-income countries like the USA and Canada, with 56% of non-homeowners in Canada and nearly 42% in the USA believing they will never own a property.

In nations with lower GDP, dissatisfaction with living conditions is prevalent, observed at 66% in the Ivory Coast and 63% in Ethiopia, exceeding the global average of 35%. Stress levels regarding housing are alarmingly high, with 35% citing it as one of their largest stressors, escalating to 64% among those in informal housing.

Health Consequences and Mental Well-Being

The relationship between a secure home and mental health cannot be overstated. Almost 89% of respondents affirmed that secure, comfortable housing contributes significantly to their mental well-being. This fact highlights that housing is not merely a financial consideration but greatly impacts individuals' well-being and ability to care for their families.

As climate change exacerbates living conditions, the report found that 30% anticipate that extreme weather events will disrupt life in their area within the next three years. Moreover, 18% expressed concerns that their housing does not protect them from severe weather conditions.

A Call to Action

The findings of this report underscore the urgent necessity for collaborative efforts among governments, businesses, and civil society. Habitat for Humanity advocates for policy engagement and investments that transform commitments into actionable strategies for housing provision. They call upon companies to innovate in housing finance, community members to leverage their voices for change, and individuals to actively participate in the development of sustainable housing solutions.
