Recent evaluations on automated driving highlight significant benefits such as the reduction in fatal accidents and an enhancement in travel quality. As automated vehicles become more integrated into our transportation system, they also offer potential improvements in environmental efficiency, although a minor disadvantage has been noted regarding overall travel time.

Key Findings of the Project



Conducted under the auspices of a major EU Flagship project, this comprehensive assessment analyzed the effects of automated driving for passenger cars. Data was sourced from actual automated vehicles operating in both urban environments and on motorways, incorporating real-time traffic scenarios along with simulations. This study is touted as one of the most thorough examinations of automated vehicle impacts on European roadways thus far.

Satu Innamaa, a Principal Scientist at VTT, stated, “Working with various European OEMs and stakeholders provided an exceptional opportunity to shape the future of transportation”. The research revealed that if 30% of the vehicles on motorways were automated, around 20% of fatal accidents could potentially be avoided. In urban contexts, this reduction is estimated to be even higher, at 22%. Notably, the study found that the number of accidents resulting in severe and minor injuries would decline significantly as well.

Travel Time Considerations



While the safety benefits are considerable, there is a minor increase in travel time expected due to rerouting and speed adjustments. The assessment suggests an overall increase between 0% and 4%, but VTT identified various technological solutions to mitigate these changes. The overall conclusion is that the advantages of automated driving would overshadow any associated societal costs and negative impacts.

Enhancements to Travel Quality



The introduction of automated driving has the potential to enhance travel quality by allowing passengers to engage in non-driving activities. This improvement is projected to encourage longer and more frequent trips, fundamentally transforming mobility patterns. The study acknowledged the anticipated changes in transport system efficiency brought about by automated vehicles, affecting both light and heavy traffic.

The research found that average energy usage per vehicle-kilometre would decrease across most driving conditions, contributing positively to environmental concerns, with CO2 emissions anticipated to drop slightly, though the impact at the network level remains marginal (between -1% to 0%).

Safety and New Accident Types



As with any technological advancement, concerns about new accident types caused by automated driving are legitimate. The projections from this study indicated that 0.3% of accidents on motorways could be attributed to scenarios where automated vehicles are required to slow down or halt unexpectedly before a human driver takes control. However, these figures are minimal when compared to the considerable safety improvements already expected from increased automation in the driving population.

The Hi-Drive Project



This significant research project, titled the Hi-Drive project, was funded to the tune of €60 million and managed by Volkswagen AG. Key outcomes included preparedness for future research and varying methodologies. The project spanned over four years, concluding in November 2025. It represented a collaborative effort among various manufacturers involved in testing real-time automated vehicles, reflecting a wide-ranging interest in understanding the implications of these technologies.
