Enhancing Disaster Response: ICT Training for Volunteers in Chofu City

On October 19, 2025, Chofu City, in collaboration with the Chofu City Social Welfare Council, will host the 'Chofu City Disaster Volunteer Center ICT Training'. This initiative is part of efforts to strengthen local disaster response capabilities through the practical application of information and communication technology (ICT). The training will focus on enhancing cooperation between citizens, organizations, and government entities, ensuring effective communication and rapid response during disasters.

The event is also a celebration of reaching 10,000 members in the Chofu Facebook community, marking it as both a learning and community achievement event. Cybozu, a major player in cloud services based in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, launched its 'Disaster Support Program' in 2020, providing free cloud services and support for information-sharing systems to aid disaster-stricken areas across Japan. Currently, implementation of ICT in collaboration with social welfare councils is advancing in 42 prefectures. For example, during the Noto Peninsula earthquake last year, significant support was delivered in coordination with the Japan Self-Defense Forces. This summer, assistance initiatives were also carried out in Kagoshima, Akita, and Shizuoka.

The training will involve practical scenarios that simulate real disaster conditions. Activities will include registering via QR codes and visualizing requests for support on a map using smartphones. These hands-on exercises aim to establish a general support framework leveraging the knowledge gained from past disasters. This is a promising opportunity for community members and officials to familiarize themselves with the tools and processes that can make a difference in times of crisis.
