This collaboration aims to enhance TISI's 'EnerLink' series by integrating a state-of-the-art electricity tracking system developed by UPDATER. This system will allow for the implementation of 'Hourly Matching,' a feature designed to correspond with the revised GHG Protocol Scope 2 calculation rules, which has garnered global attention due to increasing demands for accurate matching of electricity generation and consumption.
UPDATER's electricity tracking system is pioneering in its approach, having first commercialized this technology in 2018. The system enables the reconciliation and management of generated power and actual usage in 30-minute intervals, thereby achieving Hourly Matching. It also meets the requirements set forth by the EnergyTag initiative, an independent non-profit organization dedicated to establishing international standards for proving the timing and location of power generation. Currently, UPDATER’s electricity tracking system operates across over 600 renewable energy plants and more than 4,000 consumption sites, making it one of the largest systems of its kind domestically.
The interest in Hourly Matching has grown substantially as businesses worldwide seek to understand when, where, and how their electricity is generated, aspiring to ensure that their energy consumption is aligned with renewable sources on an hourly basis. In September 2021, the '24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact' was launched as part of this global trend. The initiative included ambitious commitments from the U.S. government to transition to 100% carbon-free electricity for federal facilities by 2030, with goals for the adoption of hourly matched renewables.
As the market for 24/7 carbon-free electricity is forecasted to grow significantly, reaching an astonishing 627.2 billion kWh by 2040, the adaptation of retail power providers to these international standards becomes increasingly crucial. The revised Scope 2 standards proposed by the GHG Protocol also highlight the need for time-specific matching to assess greenhouse gas emissions accurately.
To implement these features effectively in the 'EnerLink' series, TISI is leveraging the matching logic and blockchain technology of UPDATER’s electricity tracking system. The installation of this innovative system is projected to be completed by December 2026, targeting the integration of accurate, hourly power generation and consumption data.
The electricity tracking system will be available for external sale starting July 2025, primarily aimed at retail electricity providers and energy businesses. Utilizing the expertise developed through commercial operations, UPDATER’s technology provides seamless integration with existing customer management and billing systems, facilitating the visualization and verification of renewable energy generation and usage without necessitating the establishment of a complex tracking infrastructure.
UPDATER’s efforts have reached international recognition, with their 'Minna Denryoku' project featured as a model case by the United Nations. This solidifies their substantial operational achievements within Japan’s renewable energy sector.
Looking ahead, UPDATER is committed to expanding its reach through collaborations like the one with TISI. By 2027, the company aims to onboard 20 more clients for its electricity tracking system.
