CenTrio Seattle Launches Significant Decarbonization Efforts with New Electric Boiler Installation

CenTrio Seattle's Bold Step Towards Decarbonization

CenTrio, a leading player in the district energy sector, has taken a monumental leap in its commitment to sustainability by announcing the engineering design of a new 25-megawatt electric boiler to be installed at its Western Avenue facility in Seattle. This installation represents the first phase in a broader plan aimed at decarbonizing the district heating system that serves numerous buildings across the city.

The new electric boiler is expected to generate about 85,000 pounds of steam per hour, allowing for a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Officials predict that at full operational capacity, emissions could fall by over 60%, equating to approximately 42,000 tons annually. This ambitious project is a strategic move in alignment with local and state efforts to combat climate change and improve air quality, particularly in downtown Seattle, which is among the densest areas in the state.

CenTrio is collaborating with Affiliated Engineers (AEI) on the engineering aspects of this project and is working alongside Seattle City Light to ensure the necessary power sources are available. Construction is slated to begin in 2027 after securing engineering approvals and permits, with the boiler anticipated to start operations about two years following the start of construction.

Benefits of Decarbonization at Scale

One of the key advantages of this district-scale decarbonization project lies in its cost-effectiveness. By retrofitting a centralized system rather than implementing changes at individual buildings, CenTrio aims to reduce capital costs associated with each ton of carbon dioxide abated. This approach lessens the burden on electric utilities, minimizing the need for extensive network capacity enhancements. Moreover, it opens up avenues for large-scale thermal energy storage, which can help manage peak demand effectively.

Ian Goepferd, Vice President and General Manager of CenTrio - Seattle, highlights the benefits: “Our customers will be able to enjoy low-carbon steam without the need for significant individual retrofits. This not only saves costs but also prevents the disruption typically associated with such projects. As new buildings come up, they will automatically access low-carbon services.” Currently, CenTrio's steam system manages to supply 140 buildings, including three major hospitals, in the greater Seattle area.

A Legacy of Innovation

CenTrio has a storied history of adapting its technology and energy sources to meet the evolving demands for reliable thermal energy and environmental stewardship. The Western Avenue Plant has seen numerous upgrades over the years and this latest electrification phase marks a new chapter in the company's journey towards sustainability. CenTrio already operates the largest net-zero district cooling system in downtown Chicago and boasts a large sewer heat recovery initiative in Denver.

Conclusion

As CenTrio Seattle embarks on this ambitious decarbonization project, it sets a powerful precedent for other metropolitan areas striving to reach sustainability goals. With public support backed by the state’s Climate Commitment Act and significant grant funding, CenTrio's efforts signify not just a commitment to reducing greenhouse gases but also a pioneering step toward a more sustainable urban future.
