Electrify America Wins Electric Innovation Scalable Catalyst Award
Electrify America has been recognized with the Electric Innovation Scalable Catalyst Award by the Electric Innovation Initiative for its pioneering efforts in deploying battery energy storage systems (BESS). This initiative addresses significant challenges in the electric vehicle (EV) charging landscape by facilitating faster and more accessible Hyper-Fast charging solutions across the United States.
The Electric Innovation Initiative's award spotlights projects that promise to expand the advantages of clean energy technologies. Electrify America's BESS initiative was particularly acknowledged for its innovative solution to the prevalent issue of limited utility capacity in areas experiencing high demand, especially in underserved communities. Many rural regions encounter obstacles in establishing Hyper-Fast charging stations due to prohibitive grid upgrade expenses and inadequate power supply.
Rob Barrosa, President and CEO of Electrify America, stated, "Battery energy storage is unlocking a new chapter for EV charging. By overcoming electrical grid constraints, we can deliver Hyper-Fast charging in more places and serve more drivers." By strategically storing energy during periods of low demand and releasing it during high-demand times, BESS plays a crucial role in enabling Hyper-Fast charging in locations where utility capacity is limited.
Moreover, this innovative approach allows Electrify America to deploy larger charging stations without incurring extensive grid upgrade costs. It assures that communities throughout the country, including those traditionally underserved, gain access to the necessary EV infrastructure. Currently, Electrify America boasts over 170 BESS units operational, culminating in a total of more than 65,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy storage deployed nationwide. This deployment represents the largest rollout of BESS integrated with Hyper-Fast DC charging in North America.
In acknowledgment of this achievement, the Electric Innovation Initiative has awarded Electrify America $10,000, which the company has graciously decided to donate to Edtunity Institute. This nonprofit organization is minority-owned and veteran-led, with a mission focused on continued education and workforce development for transitioning military members and underserved populations in Virginia. This donation aims to enhance operations and maintenance vocational training, further facilitating the transition toward electric transportation.
Additionally, the Electric Innovation Initiative has unveiled a documentary that showcases the impactful project undertaken by Electrify America, highlighting the journey and substantial benefits brought about by its battery energy storage systems.
