FamilyMart Launches First Tesla Supercharger in Akita Prefecture for Electric Vehicles

FamilyMart Introduces First Tesla Supercharger in Akita

FamilyMart, a prominent convenience store chain based in Tokyo, has announced the upcoming launch of its first Tesla Supercharger station in Akita Prefecture. Set to commence operations on June 20, 2025, at the FamilyMart Akita Goshono Yumoto store in Akita City, this development marks a milestone as it will be the initial establishment of Tesla’s fast-charging infrastructure in a convenience store within the prefecture.

This initiative showcases FamilyMart's commitment to improving electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities, positioning them as a vital infrastructure hub since they began installing rapid chargers in 2010. The convenience store chain has emerged as a leader in the retail sector, boasting approximately 530 locations with EV rapid charging solutions.

Beginning June 2023, FamilyMart has embarked on a journey to enhance customer convenience while contributing to a carbon-neutral society by installing Tesla Superchargers across its stores nationwide. To date, Tesla Supercharger units have been established at 16 locations, including Saitama, Kanagawa, Aichi, Fukuoka, Aomori, Nagano, Tokyo, Wakayama, Gifu, Yamagata, Saitama, Shizuoka, and Hokkaido, with the Akita location being the latest addition aimed at accommodating rising demand in the area.

Features of Tesla Supercharger

The Tesla Supercharger simplifies the charging experience by allowing users to plug in their vehicles for automatic charging. In an impressive feat, the Supercharger can provide a charge sufficient for approximately 275 kilometers of driving in as little as 15 minutes. Across Japan, there are currently 132 Supercharger stations accounting for 669 charging units in total, with further expansions expected by the target launch date.

In addition to expanding the Supercharger network, FamilyMart plans to implement various events in collaboration with Tesla, including test drive opportunities at its store parking lots. With the ongoing growth in EV adoption across the nation, the expansion of charging infrastructure will play a significant role in facilitating accessible charging services and thereby supporting a connected society.

Overview of the New Charging Station

  • - Number of Superchargers: 4 units
  • - Maximum Output: 250 kW (charges enough for roughly 275 km in about 15 minutes)
  • - Operating Hours: 24/7
  • - Pricing: Between 43 to 233 yen per minute, varying based on output and location
  • - Total Number of Tesla Supercharger Locations: 132 with 669 units

EV Charging Situation at FamilyMart

Within the FamilyMart chain, a total of twelve prefectures feature Tesla Superchargers, leading to 17 total installations, including the one at Akita. Currently, Akita’s convenience stores house 6 CHAdeMO charging stations and 1 Tesla Supercharger, equating to a total of 7 EV chargers available in the region as of the end of May 2025.

FamilyMart continues to reinforce its mission of being an indispensable part of the community while connecting with its customers like family, enhancing convenience beyond expectations.

Context of EV Market in Japan

As of March 2023, Japan's electric vehicle market has witnessed the registration of approximately 440,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. However, in line with the government's green growth strategy aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, concrete actions toward ensuring that all new passenger vehicle sales are electric by 2035 have been affirmed. In contrast, issues surrounding charging infrastructure remain a critical barrier to rapid EV adoption. As part of its commitment, the government is pushing for the establishment of 30,000 fast-charging stations to match the convenience of gasoline vehicles by 2030, heralding a robust expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure nationwide.
