Rising Prices Affect Social Gatherings: Insights from Instabase Survey

Rising Costs and Social Dynamics

As everyday expenses continue to increase, gatherings with friends and family have been notably impacted, according to a recent survey conducted by Rebase, the company behind the matching rental space platform, Instabase. The survey, which took place in July 2026, gathered insights from 834 participants, revealing interesting nuances in social behavior during these challenging economic times.

Key Findings of the Survey

One striking takeaway from the findings is that while many individuals recognize the financial strain caused by inflation, it has not substantially dampened their desire to socialize. Approximately 71% of respondents acknowledged that rising prices have affected their gathering expenses. However, the frequency and number of attendees for events have largely remained static. Specifically, 61% reported that their budget per gathering had increased, while 14% stated it had decreased. On the other hand, the majority, 47%, said that the number of events they hosted stayed the same.

The survey further revealed that among respondents feeling the pinch of inflation, about 30% felt it had become more difficult to invite others to gatherings. This is a stark contrast to the 9% of those who did not feel the financial impact, highlighting a significant psychological barrier created by rising costs.

The Costs of Gathering: Drinking and Venue Fees

Among the factors contributing to this hesitancy, food and beverage costs ranked highest, with a striking 84% of respondents identifying it as the most significant burden. Following food and drink, venue costs were cited by 46% of participants. These expenses weigh heavily on individuals when considering hosting a gathering, making them more cautious about inviting friends and family.

To mitigate the financial strain, there has been an uptick in the use of rental spaces for parties and gatherings, particularly for groups of ten or more. Data indicates that between May and July 2026, the total spending on rental space for such events rose by an impressive 113% compared to the previous year. The appeal of these rental spaces lies in their potential for cost-sharing and the ability to bring in one’s own food and beverages, reducing the overall per-person cost.

Conclusion: The Future of Social Gatherings

The ongoing inflation has introduced complexities into social interactions, but it hasn't extinguished the desire for connection. The Instabase platform aims to address these shifting dynamics by making it easier for people to find accessible spaces for gatherings, fostering connections and nurturing community through affordable options.

As Rebase continues to champion creativity and social interaction with its platforms, Instabase remains committed to promoting gathering spaces that enhance social bonds without placing undue financial burdens on individuals. By adapting to current economic realities, the rental space industry can play a pivotal role in encouraging relationships and collaborations in an increasingly price-sensitive environment.
