Envision's Green Ammonia Powers the World's First VLAC: A Maritime Breakthrough
Envision's Groundbreaking Achievement in Sustainable Maritime Transport
In a significant development for the maritime industry, Envision, a global leader in green technology, has announced the successful fueling of the Terra Clove, the world’s first Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC), with its innovative green ammonia. This achievement marks a pivotal moment in the journey towards decarbonization in the shipping sector, promoting a more sustainable approach to maritime transportation.
The Terra Clove, owned by Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) and constructed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), was recently launched in a ceremony in South Korea. With a dual-fuel propulsion system capable of utilizing ammonia, the ship not only represents a technological advancement but also emphasizes the growing viability and scalability of green ammonia as a marine fuel.
This recent supply follows Envision's initial commercial shipment of green ammonia back in February 2026, which transported ammonia from Chifeng to LOTTE Fine Chemical at the Ulsan Port in South Korea. This shipment was significant as it marked the world's first comprehensive commercial supply chain of green ammonia, from synthesis with renewable hydrogen to international maritime logistics. By providing green ammonia to the VLAC, Envision has once again showcased its capability to connect the value chain from production and transportation to final utilization as a marine fuel.
The green ammonia for this project is sourced from Envision’s Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Industrial Park based in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia. Currently, this facility produces around 320,000 tons of green ammonia annually, with plans to ramp up total capacity to 1.52 million tons. The Chifeng plant has also received Bureau Veritas certification in accordance with ISO standards, and the green ammonia meets the requirements for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) and ISCC certifications.
Frank Yu, Senior Vice President of Envision Energy, stated, “With this fuel supply operation, we take a monumental leap towards officially connecting the entire green ammonia value chain from production to maritime application at a larger scale. The introduction of this VLAC, equipped with dual-fuel Everllence engines running on ammonia, confirms that green ammonia is now a viable and scalable marine fuel option.”
The Terra Clove’s capability to switch between traditional marine fuel and green ammonia during operations enables substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions throughout its lifecycle. This successful supply operation further solidifies Envision Energy’s standing as a global leader in green hydrogen and ammonia solutions, providing reliable, scalable, and certified green fuels that are instrumental in advancing the decarbonization efforts of the maritime industry.
As the shipping sector continues to explore eco-friendly alternatives to traditional fuel sources, Envision is committed to fostering partnerships with visionary leaders such as EPS and LOTTE Fine Chemical to drive the maritime industry towards achieving net-zero emissions. The journey ahead is promising, and with innovative solutions like green ammonia, the future of shipping looks significantly greener.
