In Memory of Honorable Lincoln Diaz-Balart: A Beacon of Leadership and Hispanic Empowerment
In Memory of Honorable Lincoln Diaz-Balart
On March 4, 2025, the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) announced with great sorrow the passing of its esteemed founder and emeritus president, the Honorable Lincoln Diaz-Balart. He was not only a leader but a titan of democracy and a fervent advocate for the advancement of Hispanics in America.
Lincoln was instrumental in founding CHLI, the nation's only bicameral and bipartisan leadership development institute. Under his vision, CHLI has worked tirelessly for nearly a quarter of a century to amplify the diverse perspectives within the Hispanic community. His extraordinary leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence and growth profoundly shaped the organization into a model of inclusivity and empowerment.
The impact of Lincoln’s work can be seen through the thousands of alumni who have benefitted from CHLI’s internship and fellowship programs. These alumni have gone on to serve as elected officials, congressional staff, and executives across various corporations and non-profit sectors. Each success story stands as a testament to Lincoln's unwavering belief in the potential of every individual.
Lincoln's legacy extends beyond just the organizations he built; it lives on in the hearts and minds of those who followed in his footsteps. He was a champion for the values of freedom and opportunity, passionately advocating for the liberties of his native Cuba while also embracing the principles of democracy in his adopted country, the United States. His eloquent discourse on the horrors of communism became a guiding light for many, offering hope and education where despair once prevailed.
As a public servant and private citizen, Lincoln was a distinguished gentleman, a brilliant scholar, and a man of his word. His formidable intellect and statesmanship demanded respect and attention. His presence was felt wherever he went, and he played a pivotal role in shaping the narrative surrounding Hispanic issues in America.
The outpouring of tributes from colleagues and friends reflects the respect and admiration so many held for him. CHLI Board Chair Ileana Ros-Lehtinen remarked on Lincoln's incredible tenacity and passion for every cause he dedicated himself to, noting how his absence will be felt deeply in both personal and professional spheres. “We will miss your wisdom and inspiration, but your legacy will guide us as we continue to empower our community,” she said.
Mary Ann Gomez Orta, the current president and CEO of CHLI, expressed heartfelt condolences to the Diaz-Balart family while reflecting on Lincoln's mentorship. She stated, “His brilliance and eloquence will be greatly missed, but the lessons we learned from him will guide us in our mission.”
As we mourn the loss of such an extraordinary leader, we also celebrate the numerous lives Lincoln touched and transformed. His tireless support for the Hispanic community, his commitment to fostering diverse thought, and his profound love for both Cuba and America are all integral parts of his remarkable legacy. In Lincoln’s memory, CHLI remains dedicated to promoting economic prosperity and social responsibility while shining a light on the rich heritage and perspectives of Hispanic Americans.
Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we find solace in the significant legacy he created. Lincoln Diaz-Balart shall be remembered not only for his impressive career but also for his generous spirit, unwavering conviction, and the indelible mark he left on the lives of those around him. Rest in peace, dear friend, until we meet again in a place where freedom reigns eternally.
