Jay Bowen's New Role as National Commander

In September 2026, Jay Bowen, a seasoned Army veteran from Colorado Springs, was elected as the National Commander of The American Legion during their 107th national convention held in Louisville, Kentucky. His election marks a notable milestone in his career dedicated to veterans and service members.

Bowen, who served as a chief warrant officer three in the Army, spent two decades of his military career focusing on radar and missile maintenance, notably on the HAWK and Patriot systems. His service also included significant involvement in Operation Desert Shield, underlining his commitment to the nation during crucial times.

Following his military career, Bowen transitioned to the private sector, where he took on various roles that combined his technical expertise and leadership skills. He managed distribution for the Bush Brothers Company, known for its baked beans, and later worked in federal defense contracting. Bowen is well-educated, holding a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Arkansas University—graduating summa cum laude—and a Master of Arts degree from Webster University.

His leadership journey within The American Legion has been extensive. Having held positions at multiple levels—from the post to the national level—Bowen has been actively engaged in the Legion's activities. He is a Paid Up For Life member of the Neal Thomas Jr.-Centennial Post 209 in Colorado Springs and has served as past commander of the Department of Colorado. His national contributions include significant roles such as chairman of the Veterans Employment and Education Commission and the Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Commission, showcasing his dedication to advancing veteran issues.
