Infinium Unveils mSAF Platform, Revolutionizing Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production
Infinium Launches Innovative mSAF Platform for Sustainable Aviation Fuel
On September 21, 2026, Infinium introduced its groundbreaking mSAF product line, representing a major advancement in the realm of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). This innovative platform harnesses methane as a feedstock to convert renewable natural gas, biogas, flare gas, and other suitable methane streams into low-carbon aviation fuel, setting the stage for a more sustainable future in air travel.
Tackling Aviation's Sustainability Challenges
The aviation sector faces increasing pressure to meet stringent regulations and commitments to reduce emissions. Infinium’s mSAF addresses this challenge by expanding the portfolio of feedstocks and production locations available for its projects. With this new offering, Infinium aims to deliver multi-faceted solutions that cater to the diverse needs of the industry, emphasizing that no single feedstock can meet the comprehensive demand for low-carbon fuel required to fulfill growing SAF mandates.
Renewable natural gas, biogas, and flare gas are already being captured in landfills, dairies, wastewater treatment plants, and gas extraction systems across North America, Asia, Europe, and beyond. These resources, however, need diversified applications, and Infinium is on the forefront of leveraging them in innovative ways.
Robert Schuetzle, CEO of Infinium, highlighted, "The mSAF platform enhances our technology's potential, allowing us to develop projects at a broader array of sites while delivering a greater quantity of low-carbon fuels alongside our expanding eSAF initiatives. The aviation industry requires scalable, varied solutions, and Infinium is well-positioned to provide such options going forward."
Proven Technology and Enhanced Output
Infinium boasts over a decade of experience converting gases into liquid hydrocarbons, with its synthesis technology already employed in numerous commercial facilities. The Synthesize™ technology, Infinium’s proprietary Fischer-Tropsch catalyst and reactor concept for converting synthesis gas to liquid hydrocarbons, is pivotal to both the mSAF and the eFuels product lines. These product lines share a common synthesis core technology and corresponding certification processes.
Central to the mSAF platform is Infinium’s proprietary Reform™ package, which includes an electric steam methane reformer (eSMR). This reformer is designed to generate synthesis gas with a reduced CO₂ footprint compared to conventional gas-fired SMRs. Notably, Infinium operates the world’s largest eSMR facility under the 'Roadrunner' project, which facilitates the conversion of methane into synthetic gas.
Traditional steam methane reforming involves burning a portion of the input gas to produce process heat, contributing combustion emissions to the fuel's lifecycle footprint. In contrast, Infinium's Reform™ technology harnesses power from renewable sources to provide this necessary heat. This means more carbon from the feedstock is available for conversion, enhancing fuel yield per unit of gas while avoiding combustion emissions associated with traditional systems. For renewable natural gas (RNG) projects, higher yields and lower reforming emissions significantly improve overall project economics.
Assessing Carbon Intensity
To ensure credible assessments of mSAF’s market potential, Infinium has partnered with RMI, an independent research group focused on energy and climate. The collaboration aims to evaluate the growing opportunities for mSAF in the realm of carbon-reduction initiatives.
Bryan Fisher, Executive Director of RMI, remarked, "Biogas and renewable natural gas are emerging as vital research areas for sectors where emission reductions are challenging to achieve, such as low-carbon fuels and industrial value chains. While these strategies can indeed contribute to significant climate benefits and economic gains, they must be underpinned by rigorous lifecycle accounting and verifiable tracking systems."
The designation of mSAF does not imply a uniform carbon intensity value for all projects, as emissions over the lifecycle depend on factors such as methane source and leakage rates. Infinium is committed to calculating carbon intensity at the project level according to applicable regulatory and voluntary certification frameworks, ensuring independent verification.
By integrating mSAF into its eFuels platform, Infinium broadens the range of feedstocks available for producing low-carbon fuels, simultaneously advancing its efforts in CO₂-based eSAF. This strategic approach positions Infinium at the forefront of the transition to a more sustainable aviation industry,
