Workshop for Inclusive Design: Creating a Better Tomorrow
On June 28th, 2026, the Anywan Project will host its second workshop titled "Tukuru o Hiraku" (Opening Creation) in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. This initiative aims to bring together individuals coping with chronic diseases or disabilities, and those responsible for developing consumer products and services, to collaboratively explore inclusive design solutions.
The guiding principle of this workshop is the vision of a society where both individuals with medical conditions and those without can thrive. Leading the charge are three advocates living with chronic illnesses, under the banner of the Anywan Project, a general incorporated association located in Nerima, Tokyo, and helmed by director Yuki Kozaki.
Focus on Inclusion Through Dialogue
Each session will accommodate a maximum of six participants from both demographics, emphasizing dialogue as a key mechanism to share everyday challenges and insights. This environment will promote mutual understanding and aim to take the first step towards a world in which everyone can lead a normal life. The event is supported by Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., and will take place on the 12th floor of the Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower.

The Importance of User Interviews
In developing B2C products and services, determining who the target audience is and what value you're delivering is crucial. Often overlooked are the perspectives of those dealing with chronic illnesses and their families. People in these situations are adept at identifying needs based on daily frustrations or inconveniences; they are the ones most aware of what could improve their lives.
Engaging these individuals before launching new products or services provides invaluable insights and learning opportunities that can significantly influence the development process. Furthermore, this collaborative approach allows those directly affected by these conditions to validate their past struggles as useful experiences in helping others, fostering a sense of purpose and contribution.
The goal is to transform the experiences of those living with chronic illnesses and disabilities into powerful tools for development, rather than mere opinions.
Recap of the First Workshop
The inaugural session of "Tukuru o Hiraku" took place on February 7, 2026, attended by six participants from various backgrounds affected by neurodegenerative diseases, skin disorders, cancers, and both physical and mental disabilities. They collaborated with representatives from consumer-driven industries such as food, retail, manufacturing, and e-commerce.
The feedback gathered—achieving a 100% response rate—revealed that all participants were entirely satisfied with the experience. Comments reflected the sharing of diverse perspectives and a renewed determination to pursue achievable goals despite their conditions. The positive outcomes of the event have sparked expectations for further initiatives that could amplify the voices of affected individuals within societal frameworks.
Notably, this undertaking was featured on TBS Radio's "Matomete! Doyobi" segment, further widening its reach. A report of the first workshop, complete with photographs and participant testimonies, is also available online.
