Understanding IBD Through Art
The I Know IBD Project has launched a unique initiative to raise awareness about inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The spotlight of this initiative is a striking mosaic art piece that has been created using 808 photos submitted by various supporting businesses and individuals from across the country. This artwork serves as a message of encouragement and understanding for patients living with IBD and was unveiled on IBD Day, May 19.
What is IBD?
IBD encompasses chronic conditions primarily involving ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. These gastrointestinal disorders cause significant symptoms like diarrhea and abdominal pain, profoundly impacting the daily lives of those affected. The project aims to break down the "invisible walls" that IBD patients face, especially concerning their worries about restroom access when they are outside their homes.
Launched in May 2022, the I Know IBD Project strives to improve the overall perception and understanding of IBD in society. With support from numerous companies and stores, the initiative has gained considerable traction across all 47 prefectures in Japan. Currently, the project collaborates with 173 companies and 3,112 stores, providing a supportive ecosystem for IBD patients.
The Mosaic Art Initiative
The stunning mosaic artwork was crafted using contributions from the community, including companies, shops, and AbbVie employees. It aims to convey the message of solidarity with IBD patients and improve awareness among the public. As one of the project's standout features, the art beautifully shapes the logo of I Know IBD, encouraging visibility and support for the cause. The mosaic art was made available for viewing on the project’s official website starting from IBD Day, May 19.
Community Impact
Many IBD patients narrate their feelings of comfort knowing that public restrooms are available when they are out. The project encapsulates these sentiments, allowing patients to feel supported and understood in their everyday challenges. AbbVie’s commitment to expanding supportive networks for IBD patients is evident in this artistic endeavor and ongoing community outreach efforts.
The project is not just about raising awareness; it also seeks to provide practical solutions. Partnerships with local businesses allow patients to utilize their facilities without fear or hesitation. By displaying stickers in their establishments, employees are reminded of the importance of IBD awareness, promoting a broader understanding of the condition.
Growing Awareness and Support
Since its inception, the I Know IBD Project has worked tirelessly to create a culture of understanding around IBD. As a part of its commitment, AbbVie constantly shares educational resources with partnering companies to elevate IBD awareness. The journey so far has seen a marked increase in public knowledge and empathy regarding IBD, which will continue to benefit patients who live with these conditions.
Future Goals
Looking ahead, the I Know IBD Project plans to expand its initiatives further. Advertising campaigns featuring the mosaic art are slated for display in prominent locations, such as major train stations in Tokyo, to deepen public awareness and initiate conversation surrounding IBD and its invisible challenges.
The IBD community is vibrant and resilient. Through projects like I Know IBD, there is hope for a future where individuals are more aware, educated, and compassionate about those who live with inflammatory bowel diseases. AbbVie remains committed to enhancing the quality of life for patients and working towards a society that not only understands IBD but actively supports those who are affected by it.
