Helping Survivors and Milberg Team Up to Combat Child Exploitation on Snapchat
Addressing the Rising Threat of Child Exploitation on Snapchat
In a significant move to combat the alarming rise in child exploitation cases associated with Snapchat, the advocacy group Helping Survivors has partnered with the prominent class action law firm Milberg. This initiative aims to inform families about their legal options and to facilitate claims against Snapchat (Snap Inc.), particularly concerning issues of grooming and financial sextortion that have surged across social media platforms.
Recent data from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children underscores the severity of this crisis. Reports regarding online enticement have skyrocketed from approximately 292,951 to a staggering 518,000 in just months. Furthermore, cases of financial sextortion have surged by over 50%, highlighting an urgent and rapidly evolving threat to minors. With more than 500,000 online predators operating daily, children as young as eight have reported encounters with individuals attempting to groom them through these platforms, underscoring the necessity for early awareness and action.
Advocates such as Kathryn Kosmides, who works with Helping Survivors, stress that the manipulative tactics employed by predators often follow a predictable pattern. Victims are frequently approached by individuals posing as peers, fostering trust before coercion sets in. “By the time a child or their parents recognize that something is amiss, the situation can be dire,” Kosmides states. This reality necessitates rapid response and support for affected families.
Moreover, current lawsuits against Snapchat assert that the platform's design inadequately safeguards against these predatory behaviors. These legal actions, initiated by state officials in Texas and New Mexico, allege that Snapchat has not only failed to warn users and guardians about inherent risks but has also contributed to the systemic issue of child exploitation through its platform features.
Marc Grossman, a Senior Partner at Milberg, emphasizes the importance of civil litigation in addressing these complex scenarios, particularly when evidence tends to vanish rapidly.
